1 Samuel 13:8-14

8 He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. 9 So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered up the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel. Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash, 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

13 “You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

__________
The verses above show that Saul’s impatience and need of control lead to disastrous consequences for his future. By taking matters in his hands he ruined his reign without knowing it. And this is something we all deal with at some point in our lives.

Sometimes we desperately want things to happen that we end up stepping out of God’s will. But please remember that if God made you a promise, He will surely fulfil it at the right time. He doesn’t need your help to accomplish what He said he would do for you.

This also applies when you’re waiting on God to answer your prayer for guidance. The Holy Spirit wants to help you and waiting patiently on his instructions is way better than taking actions and regretting it afterwards.

So let go of the control and be still. There’s no need to rush. God cares about you and He will come through.

PRAYER

Father God, strengthen my faith in you and don’t let me act out of impulse. Always remind me that your timing is perfect. Help me to rely on you daily and trust you more. Thank you in advance for everything. In Jesus’name, Amen.

Context, context and again context.

Read the passage again, Saul is loosing the war, his men are frighten and starting to leave, his has hung on rallying his men for seven day's and there is no sign of the prophet!

To say he should have been patient shows no understanding of the pressure he was under.

We cannot ignore either his problem or his lack of faith.
Yes with 20:20 hindsight we can see what he should have done.

Would you have done any better?

I know the whole story and I'm well aware of the context. Nothing in my text was bashing Saul's decision anyway.

And if that's how you interpret it, sorry to say that you missed the whole point of this devotional. Feel free to read it again.

I don't know if I would have done any better. But then again I've never judged him so ...
