The AALC is a Lutheran synod that is comprised of congregations formerly from the old American Lutheran Church who refused to become part of the ELCA when it was formed in 1988. It has no ties with the ELCA. Their seminary recently relocated to the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary (LCMS) in Fort Wayne, IN.

The LCMC is an arm of, and has ties with, the ELCA.

Lutheran Churches in Mission for Christ.

It is an association of congregations that was born from the Word Alone Network. Many congregations are members both of the ELCA and the LCMC, but some have broken ties alltogether with the ELCA, and opted to be LCMC only congregations.

Technically, Dan, the name is Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ.

1. A congregation can be part of LCMC and an "official" denomination at the same time. TAALC is a separate entity, and hence a dneomination, but we do not allow joint membership.

2. LCMC also allows congregations to have women pastors; TAALC does not permit women pastors.

This from the LCMC web site:

"LCMC is also a centrist Lutheran church body, recognizing Scripture as the sole source and norm of faith and life, and therefore being a light to, rather than a reflection of, the world. LCMC celebrates the priesthood of all believers at every level. LCMC also constantly strives to support and uphold the pastoral ministry of the men and women called to serve its member congregations."

If one were to use historical analogies (which don't really work), the LCMC looks and acts similar to the 1961 version of LCA; TAALC would be much closer to the ALC of 1930, which was in talks with LCMS even then.

BTW, LCMS and TAALC are in the midst of fellowship discussions. Three topics were covered in early october (Church and Ministry; Lay Ministry; Charismatic Movement). Four more topics are scheduled for discussion in March.

What are the theological differences between the LC-MS and TAALC?

why was the LCMC formed? If a Pastor from the ELCA became solely a LCMC pastor (by his congregation for instance totally taking themselves out of the ELCA), is he still considered to be a pastor for an ELCA church, or does that body then not recognize him?

He/she would not be eligible for a call/assignment withint he ELCA.

Funny you should ask. ;)

The issue revolves around what does it mean to be confessional? As the discussions are progressing, it is clear that they are not far apart.

Again, as I stated in another thread, I was an ordained pastor in the LCMS and recently was certified for pastoral service in TAALC. My ordination vow in the LCMS was no different, nor is the confessional subscription different in the two.

In Christ's love,
filo
