Galatians is one book that is full of such messages. "So if the Son sets you free, you are really free!" (John 8:36, emphasis mine). Freedom is not the absence of authority or rules, but the ability to self-govern. The rules may exist. They may even be helpful sometimes, but the point is not to follow the rules to get what is good. The point is to know what is right and to do what is right, simply because it is right. Only God can really know or control the outcome of our lives, so instead of being concerned about following the rules for the sake of the outcome, why not just do what you believe to be morally right and stop worrying about anything else?

Most people have an issue with following rules, yet there are plenty of blessings to be had by learning to obey God, for our sake and for the sake of others around us.
