  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I found this online:
In 1546 the Council of Trent made the Vulgate the official version of the Catholic Church, and in 1592 the official text with no variants was promulgated by Clement VIII. All subsequent editions of the Vulgate published with the church’s imprimatur represent this Clementine edition.

Is the Vulgate the 'official' Bible of the Catholic Church? If so, why? Is the reasoning similar to the Textus Receptus onlyism found amoung Baptists? If not, how does it differ?

The true "official" Bible, of course, is the original Hebrew and Greek, since that is what was inspired by God. The Vulgate could be seen as the official Bible, since that's the version that, since Trent, is used in the Mass and Office.

There is now a revised version, called the Nova Vulgata, which is used in the new Mass. It's mostly similar to the Clementine Vulgate approved by Trent, but reflects a lot of the scholarship which has occurred over the past few centuries, especially the 20th.

Before Vatican II, certain vernacular versions were approved for private use, most notably for English speakers, the Douay-Rheims. Once the Mass was allowed to be said in the vernacular, each national bishop's conference was allowed to choose a version to use in their country. Currently, the US Lectionary is from the New American Bible, while Canada uses the New Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition. I think the UK uses the New Jerusalem Bible.
