  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am in my late 30's. I can remember the 1960's as a child and I can remember music that seemed somehow "evil" or scary and really I think that whole time was kinda creepy! I am referring to the years 1967-1971. What do you think....Was late 60's music creepy to you?
I know how you feel, but I really enjoy the late 60's music. Pschedelia has always appealed to me.

Perhaps you're referring to alot of music from Syd Barret?

Pink Floyd did alot of interesting work in Ummagumma or A Saucerful of Secrets. Anything out of the psychedelic movement can seem scary to people (especially if they're on heavy drugs) but that wasn't so much the point as is/was the technology and experimentation of the time.

I've heard the same said about my music and I'm 26. Pink Floyd captured the moment of course, but they basically grew out of that type of scary sounding chaos and developed a good rock sound. (basically after Syd Barret left)

Some others:

King Crimson, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Gong, Aphrodite's Child..

There's a SLEW of others but those are probably what you mean by "scariest"

A few bands even took that to the next level and incorporated their music into horror films. Goblin comes to mind. I think Vangelis (from Aphrodite's Child) did some soundrack work too.

Well, we probably don't agree on why it was the high water mark ;)

Listen to the Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, and Tim Buckley much? :)
Not much. Out of the 3, I've probably listened to Velvet Underground the most.

If I could pick a year to be born and it had to be in the 20th Century, I might choose about 1950.

I'd have run off to San Francisco - the very center of the hippie culture and the psychedelic music. The Grateful Dead are my band. Since coming to Christ I don't listen to them as much as I used to but I know everything about them, saw them and the Jerry Garcia Band combined over 200 times, traveled this nation back and forth only God knows how many times. That music is still to this day a very part of me and helped me become who I am. My other favorites of the era - Janis, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, early CSNY, Doors, Allman Brothers Band. As far as psychedelic though, man, early Dead from 67-71 is mindblowing. Back then they often played the same songs (duh, 'cause they didn't have that many at the time versus their later years where you could go five shows in a row and NEVER hear the same song twice!) Anyway, they played shows that would make people run and scream or make their ears fall off. They knew what they were doing when they played like that, they helped perfect the art of the jam during those early days of feedback and noodling on their instruments things that went along with what the other guys were doing. Absolutely incredible stuff.

If it wasn't for Christ I'd trade my life to be living in Frisco back in 67-71. I'd dodge the draft and protest war on the campus of Berkeley, I'd hop in my VW bus and drive cross country to Woodstock, I'd be pure hippie while listening to some of the best music in the world, in my opinion.

Looking at my life today you'd never know I used to follow the Dead and once upon a time be a die hard Democrat and against all war! How I've changed in many ways! A part of me is still hippie, though, and interestingly many hippie ideals are VERY similar to those of Christianity - always show kindness, love your brothers and sisters one and all, help each other out especially those in need.

Anyway... peace, man. Garciya Later
