Lance is a vampire. Not through choice, which is something different than most vampires. Some are born to it, and are refused the choice as well, but Lance was converted. He had AIDS, in human life. When he was attacked, his immune system was way too weak to fight off the vampiric virus.
He got aids because he was a drug addict, a coke addict, and shared needles at some point. He no longer is addicted, as the vampiric virus has healed him of both the AIDS and the withdrawal symptoms of not having coke.
He's about to find out however, that he now has a new addiction, that one of blood. And, the more he ignores it, the worse it's going to get. He requires it to live, to survive, and he is going to have to struggle with this new burden.
