• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Anyone doing this medicine? How is it working?

My hubs just started it and he is EVEN, but has a headache and leg aches

Yes I am on Lamictal. I'm not sure what dosage your hub was put on to begin with...I started on 25mg for a week, then up 25mg till I reached 100mg, on 100mg for 2 weeks now I am on 150mg for another 2 weeks till "we" find the "magic dose".

They say if you start with a low dosage side affects are small to none. I started noticeing a difference when I "hit" 75mg. (so did my family) My moods are even and I am sleeping at nights. I'm not sure if my tiredness is due to this med. I occassionally get headaches...again I am not sure if it is the meds. I have NOT experienced leg aches. But highly recommend you speak with your doc re: this.

Of course like every med it affects us all different.
I hope this was "somewhat" helpful.

Dear Anna N. Amos

I have been on this med for about 3 years and it has gotten the desired effect. It didn't take long before it took care of the rest of my problem.

I take both Zoloft ( sertraline ) and Lamictal ( lamotrigine ) In combination my problem was taken care of.

I take the generic version of both.

I take 100mg of Lamitcal morning and night

I have had no adverse reactions to either one of those meds. I have had many bad reactions to other meds.

Read up on the computer about any known adverse effects that are known to occur.

Plus keep in close touch with the doctor on any question you may have.

Be patient and remember that what works for me may well not for your husband. It's a trial and error kind of thing till the right meds are found.

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

X Even though you can't see him, GOD is there!!! O
( click on the x and drag to the O ) ( then see who is with you ) steven

I have a question about insurance and Lamictal. Since I was going to start a thread entitled Lamictal, I thought that I would piggyback in here. I hope that you don't mind or that it is a rule violation!

I have been thinking of asking the psychiatrist about Lamictal when I go in (because I have seen it really work for a couple of people and heard mostly good things about it), if she does feel that I meet the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar...

I was looking on my insurance forumlary and it says "formulary restricted" under Lamictal - could it be something that my insurance won't pay for for Bipolar? Has anyone had that experience? I know that without insurance Lamictal is very espensive.

My mom and I are both on Lamictal. It's okay. We get kinda tired. We also noticed that sometimes we can here people talking, but the understanding them part is a little fuzzy. It's kinda weird. And hard to describe. But, yeah, it's okay. It keeps us relatively happy.

Anna...I was just wondering... is your husbands leg aches in his calfs?? And is his headache all over or on his temples?

That hearing but not understanding side effect sounds scary. Is that a common side effect of Lamictal?

(...........running to check that out somewhere online)

I personally have not experienced hearing being a "little fuzzy". If you do find that info...please post it. I am going to the pharmacy tomorrow and getting a printout on Lamictal again. I have NO idea where my original copy is

 Hey Musicalmeg...1st off, WELCOME to CF  I see by the # of posts you've made...your new here! (and I guess the word "newbie" under your name would be a major hint to me  )

What I was wondering...are you and your Mom always tired or just sometimes. And are you really tired, as it interfers with your day...or is it mild? And just one more question...do you take naps during the day to deal with the tiredness?

Hey, I am on a med similiar to lamictal. Here is the web page with the info about lamictal www.lamictal.com It has a side bar tab for side effects info. Yes, it can be sedating, but divided doses, even moore at noc if necessary can often take care of this, but definitely work with your doc on dosing schedule. And yes, always be honest with your doc about where you are and what you are experienceing. Hearing voices is not usually a side effect of meds and would definitely be something to mention to your doc as it can be a warning sign of problems to comes whether it can be related to a med or not.

The tiredness isn't usually so bad that it interferes with the day. We're pretty much a little tired all day, though. (My mom drinks a lot of coffee and soda and tea to counteract that.) My mom doesn't really take naps, but I occasionally find myself falling asleep during the day. And we do take most of our dosages at night. Of course, most antidepressants do seem to make you tired... Makes no sense to me.

I was on Lamictal for two and a half months, and it didn't work for me. Of course, people are different and I'm one that what works for most, does the opposite for me. ( Like: They gave me prednisone when I had an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Most people who take prednisone gain weight. When I took it, I lost 5 lbs in 3 days. )
I hope the Lamictal works well for your hubby and I see that it has worked for some here.
I'll keep you and hubby in my prayers.
God Bless!
:hug:'s and :angel::kiss:es!!

I have been on Lamictal for over a year now. It has been a miracle drug for me. Like others they started me out at 25mg and worked me up to 100mg per day.

I have not experienced any ill side effects from it that I know of but it has helped me to be able to think more clearly and logically. It has also stopped the running thoughts I had prior to taking it.

I've been on Lamictal for a week or so now, and I'm up to 50mg now. The first few days were okay, until a small uncomfortable social insident pushed me back into depression. Today's been worse than yesterday, and last night was the first night I took the 50mg dose. What the? How can one stupid thing crash you all the way down into the depths after you've spent the four or five days trying to get a grip on things and slowly getting better?

Sorry, I guess this is just a fustrated gripe. I just don't think it's normal that one small thing should cause a complete relapse. I hope 100mg is the magic number for me...I'd hate to be on this drug for a month just to find out it doesn't work.

Hey Dos4GW

Give the meds and you some time Dos! Glad you feel free to "gripe" here (it's a good place to do that :) ) Believe me in "our world" one small thing can seem like Mount Everest! Actually...one small thing to me could mean Mount Everest to you and visversa.

I'm on 150mg and doc thinks that's "good for now"...I didn't "notice" any change till I hit 75mg.

In time Dos4GW!!!

I can't tell you how wonderful lamictal is for me. It literally saved my life. The med is wonderful! No side effects at all. It does not make me tired. Depakote made me sleep all the time. Lithium made me gain 75 pounds. Neither of them worked very well. Lamictal has worked wonders for me.
