I have heard that not only are unclean animals forbidden to be eaten but also that ANYTHING made of the animal is forbidden. It struck me as odd when I read concerning Yochanan the Immerser:

Matthew 3:4, "Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey."

Aparaently, camel is clean or Yochanan and Elijah transgressed the command, or clean/unclean refers to food only, or we have a translation issue.

I had thought of that awhile ago, and did some research on it but can't remember now what was the outcome. I don't believe a camels hair is forbidden to touch, like a swines flesh. But it does say camel hair, which may be able to be rmoved like a llama's to make rough cloth with?

The locusts are kosher to eat though, I do know that, not that I would go a hunting for some for dinner but if that is what the L-RD sends to sustain me , Oh well!

Then why was Elijah wearing it? is swines flesh forbidden to touch even on a living swine? Further if Elijah was aloud to have camelhair does that mean you can to? There was thi8s cool jacket I saw that was made out of kangeroo skin but i decided against because of it, theres a goatskin version too but the roo skin is better quality. where do you draw the line?

The hats that the Chasidim wear are made from Beaver skins, another treif animal.

And I found this on a "Ask the Rabbi " type of site:

What about 'unkosher' hats and gloves? It's permitted to touch an animal carcass, even though it imparts tumah (ritual defilement). Furthermore, once the hide is processed it no longer imparts tumah.
So, I guess as long as you don't try to eat your hat or coat, you are OK.

This comes from Ask Moses

Is it kosher to wear a pig-skin coat?

The laws of Kosher apply only to eating. There is no problem with wearing (or using) an item which comes from any non-Kosher animal.

The only non-kosher items from which we are forbidden to derive any benefit are: 1) A mixture of milk and meat. 2) Chametz on Passover. 3) Grains or other seeds which were planted in a vineyard

So , as long as you don't wear a cheeseburger.................;) :D

Guess you can't be Mayor! :D

Not that I like cheesebergers, but I personally dont think its in violation.
"Do not boil a young goat in it's mother's milk." It's not exactly boiled rather melted slightly ontop, further its not straight milk, further its unlikely that the mother and the meat are of eachother. I know it could be not to interpret so literally, rather generally, but Abraham had butter and meat so...
