  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am just learning how to knit and am trying to knit a scarf - just all knitting. My first several rows had 20 stitches and now I have 22. I don't know how that happened or how to fix it. What do I do?
Thanks. :o
Hi. It is very easy to pick up a thread and knit it instead of a stitch. You may actually be able to see where this has happened. You really need to identify where you have accidentally increased and take the work back. I am really hoping you haven't knitted too much past the increase. Could you show your work to someone else who knits as they might be able to spot where you went wrong more easily than you and help you put it right?

Please don't worry as it is easily done. I have done this many times myself, as I expect most of us who post here have done.

Please let us know how you get on?

Blessings

Hmm, I may be doing that. I will try to take my knitting to a friend of mine who knits tomorrow and have her help me with it.

Just wondering how you are getting on with your scarf?

I just took it apart and started over again. I asked my friend, but she was not quite sure what I might have done. I guess I am working slowly but I am working on it and it is growing. Right now it is rather like a long potholder :D .

Frogging is definitely not fun, but sometimes the only way to fix the problem is to rip the project out and start over again.

Another common problem that leads to extra stitches is what's known as an accidental yarn over. It happens when the yarn is accidentally brought to the back of the work when you should be purling or to the front of the work when knitting.

Yes I had to do this the other day, I was knitting some socks and realised that improvising on the pattern wasn't going to work so I had to pull it apart.

For the OP, it does sound like you have accidentally picked up some stiches.

It is easy enough to do. At least you didn't drop the stiches because that is something that tends to happen to me too.

Keep going with it, it sounds like you are learning fast.

Thank you. I have also started crocheting which I knew how to do a little bit years ago. I am finding crochet much easier than knitting partly because I don't think I am holding the needles right when I knit or something.
My daughter got me some knitting and crochet books for my birthday and I am having fun with them and learning. I crocheted a couple of scarves - not well and not properly but I used fuzzy yarn and the mistakes don't show so each of my daughters has one now. I am currently knitting a scarf for my son and it is taking me longer. I decided to use the real fat knitting needles that we had from when my dd learned how to knit in girl scouts several years ago and they work fine, but are very long. I have knit one roll of yarn and am halfway done on my son's scarf. I am also crocheting a scarf using the directions in the knitting and crocheting for dummies book that my dd gave me and it is coming out very nice. I also started another fuzzy crochet scarf for my niece, and now that I read the book some I may be doing a nicer job on hers than I did on my daughter's scarves.
It is fun and I am enjoying it.
