I knew the moment I decided to post this topic in television there would be many concerned people reading it going, What's going on? Kevin Smith is a movie director, isn't he? What's the deal? Somebody should do something. Why would he be in the television folder? Somebody should do something.
Please allow me to explain. Kevin Smith directed several cult comedies featuring the Jay and Silent Bob minor characters, including Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Mallrats. His connection to television is through the Canadian series "Degrassi." It started in the 80's with Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, and there is a new series called Degrassi Next Generation.
When he was growing up, he was a big fan of the original Degrassi. So was I. It was shown on PBS on Sunday mornings and afternoons. I used to think, if only I had grown up in Canada, I would have had a happier teenage life. Kevin Smith was the same way. But, unlike me, he is really funny. He would had me rolling on the floor if I had known him in high school.
In an interview on his Degrassi project, he says that his wife doesn't like the Degrassi shows at all. She prefers the glossier, escapist American teenage shows like Beverly Hill 90210 and My So Called Life. Aaron Spelling's original idea was to create an American version of Degrassi, but it never became a realistic show by any stretch. It was all escapist fantasy, just like all American shows.
What are your thoughts on these high school based shows?
