Proverbs 5: 15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. (NIV)
We don’t use wells or cisterns so much today, so this illustration may not resonate with you. But, what Solomon is saying here, with regards to intimacy, is keep it at home. For us today, we might say, “Eat food out of your own fridge.” We understand that. Imagine being hungry and going to your neighbor’s house and rummaging through his refrigerator. You would get the, “Just what do you think you are doing?” Trouble? Yeah there would be trouble. We eat from our own fridge at our own house. Well that is exactly what Solomon is talking about and he is making the illustration in regards to intimacy or morality. You and I are to only be intimate with our spouse. We are to keep our intimacy at home. In other words, we are to keep away from the intimacy buffet. God’s plan and the boundary that has been set is we enjoy intimacy with our spouse – not the whole world. This is the one place where sharing is inappropriate. So, when the temptation comes, how do we stay true to this passage in our world today? Read on and find out.
