  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The doorbell just rang, and two JW women were there ready to hand me a pamphlet. I told them I had read their literature before and was on the computer reading Christian MB's. They said, "Have a good day, and we encourage you to read the Bible."

Then the phone rings and my brother asks, "Did you convert?"  He said they were at his house about the same length of time.  First time I had seen any around in years, although pamphlets were left a couple of times.

Not too long ago two Mormon fellows came to my door. I had just put my children down for a nap and I was really tired myself. They wanted to come in and talk to me, at first I was tempted to let them in so that I could show them the error of their ways (LOL)--but I just said no thank you.

They were very pleasant. I wonder why they always dress in black, though.

I always laugh when I think about the trick my Dad pulled once....

Some JWs came to the door and asked, "May we come in and share some Scripture with you, sir?", and Dad said, "Sure you can. And in fact, my pastor is here at the moment. We can all share some Scripture."

The he turned around and yelled over his shoulder, "Hey, Father?"

He turned back, and they were gone.

The JW's, it seems, are terrified of getting into a theological debate with a Catholic priest.

The best part was, my father wasn't even Catholic----my mother was. :)

As far as the JW's...they gave up on me a long time ago. Since they say they are the 144,000 in Revelation my mom used to ask them how they could guarantee she would be saved if there were only 144,000 of them that were going to make it and there are alot more than 144,000 JW's.
I, on the other hand, take Chuck Misslers approach and ask them which tribe they are from (since the 144,000 are from the 12 tribes)...they get all garbled up on that one.

When it comes to the mormons...I don't let them into my house...I put it right out there that since they came to my door they will have to hear the gospel. Then we discuss it. For a while they were comming back with alot more people (I guess they do that...if the arguement is too hard for them they bring people who know more) every time. It was pretty cool having all those people around listening to the gospel. They stopped after I started giving them the name of a book that shed light on what they could not answer. Maybe I got to dangerous for them to send anymore people to me.

BTW...in both instances I reject any literature they would give to me telling them it would be wrong to have messages I think are as good as apostasy in my house. I don't have them come in either due to their blasphamy of the Holy Spirit. It makes more of a point to them than anything really having to do with my house.

Here's something that always works when a JW shows up at your door. Just mention these words: "I'm Catholic." They will walk away. This has happened twice to me and worked like a charm. I also remember reading about this on TBTSNB and others there, including many non-catholics, used this ploy and it worked for them, too.

I agree, JW's really don't know how to handle Roman Catholics. I always ask about the 144, 000 and then I ask if I read their stuff, will they read mine. *LOL*

My father, a Catholic, but a career Marine, says that's why he has a nice long driveway - plenty of time to aim as they come up it! (He's so BAAAAAaaad!)

But honestly, while theological issues are one thing, I always felt that the niceness and sincerity that JW's seem to have when going to door-to-door, etc, was never genuine... it seemed like an act. And that fakey-ness was the first thing that really made me dislike the whole concept of JW's. I really dislike fake people/inauthentic people/superficial people......

I don't believe this is accurate. I think (maybe someone can clarify this) that they say that the 144,000 have already accepted Christ, and that no more will be saved. Their hope (to them) is that they might live forever on earth where as those who have true salvation will live forever in heaven.

Well, not always fellas. Back 50 years ago, I do remember my dad telling them we were Catholics. They didn't leave imediately. I tried it 25/30 years ago and they kept talking, one saying she had been Lutheran. But the TRUE TEST was when they came to the Rectory and debated with my former pastor. They knew where they were and one claimed to be a former Catholic.

Maybe this is to hone their skills. :D

my daughter had a calssroom aide who was a JW. a very nice lady. she was there Sept 11. it really upset the kids that she would not wear a flag pin the teacher let them discuss why shdidn t want to. the year before the class --about 5 members--insisted that she get Christmas cards and gifts from them too. I called her and the teacher about it. Mrs D was very gracious and accepted the items in the spirit they were intended I gave her a winter scene card as i did he teacher so my daughter would not get in trouble for handing out religous stuff in a public school. we had several discussions at home about JW s and what they believe. it must be tough bieng a JW parent at holiday time although each year i think they have the right idea about skippin all theChristmas foo faa.

Before I was saved I always demanded that our Christmas tree went up no matter what!!

Now my opinion is ...'you don't have to put it up on my behalf' :D

I know what you mean, jukes. There was a group of them that came to my door about a month ago. I was in the middle of doing laundry, letting the dog in before she killed one of them, and getting lunch made for myself and the Wee One, and I was really in no mood to debate fine points of theology with them, so I simply said, "Thanks, but I am a Catholic; and I have absolutely no intention of ever being anything but Catholic."

They said, "Okay, sir. Have a nice day," and they left.

When they knock at my door I say that I am a practicing, devoted, Mass attending Catholic, bless you and good day and they always will say...'Great! Here are some pamphlets for you." explaining to me who Jesus is.

One Mormon even said to me that in the future he hopes I will be more open to hearing the message of Jesus next time a missionary comes my way. I even had a JW once tell me that Jesus didn’t discriminate, he talked to people of all religions. :(

Initially, I want to scream! How insulting it is to imply as if we do not know Jesus! But I know that these people are told so many lies and myths I ultimitly have to be kind and understanding.  :sigh:

One Mormon years ago says to me a Catholic, after he was informed that I was mother of many children that raises her kids in the Church, that he would like to come back sometime and talk to me about family values.

What is it that they think about us?

I've never had any Mormons knock on my door--unless you count the time in college when my one roommate was on everyone's nerves. He worked till like 4 am each night so we thought we'd get him back. I called the local Mormon church and said I was him and that I was in a spiritual crisis and needed their help. I told them that 6 am would be a good time to come because I'd get up and get ready for class at 8 (when in fact he would be sleeping and his classes didn't start til like after noon). So, needless to say, the Mormons showed up pounding on that door and woke him up. It was too funny. And he got a free Book of Mormon out of the deal.

My grandpa just says "We're Catholic" and then politely closes the door.  My parents pretend like we're not home, and they won't let me have any fun with them, which is a bit disappointing.  It's mostly Mormons in my hometown, and I would probably just swipe one of my mom's cigaretts, pour a glass of wine, and offer them either of those or a cup of coffee.
