I used to work at a Salvation Army Thrift Store.

One thing that troubled me was the type of books and vidios that where being sold in the store.

R rated moves and smut books seem to be sold without question.

I remember point this out to the manager one afternoon after looking at a Romance Book cover which carried a quotation "From his office into his bed". When I asked why we sold such trash books. She just walked away without a word.

When I question the selling of R. movies she said she would check with the office. She came back later to say that the office had said to pull them from the shelves. A week later they were back on the shelf and I was told that one of the other employees was going to check them. To my knowledge nobody checked them there after.

I have noticed the same type of material in other SA Thrift Stores, so I guess money is more important than the morals that the Army is suppose to be teaching over the pulpit and backed up by the Bible.

This happens in our church too. We are sent things from a few churches to help with our Rummage Sales. If I am at a sale, I just pick out the things that are R rated and trash them. I just think some people don't look at the item or are not convicted such things are wrong. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to throw things out occassionally.

I did that as well, but it don't go over to good when management doesn't always agree with that.

Yes, I can imagine. I am on Vestry and so I find it easy to do this. Last time I explained to one of the workers that I was throwing away a book because it was not acceptable and told her why, she was glad that I did. It is sad that not all people have our convictions though, I know the Lord would be trashing some things too if He came to visit, and most likely some would be trying to hide the stuff before He saw it.

The problem, I do believe, is that not all thrift shops are run by Salvos, or even Christians for that matter... shouldn't this be the case? I love op shopping and always to into salvo stores, I find it very disheartening to find that most Salvo Stores in my area wouldn't have a clue what The Salvation Army does or that it is even a church!! Where did our mission go?

Awww that's sad.

I went to a Salvation Army place that had a shelter for the homeless. I was on a course and it was across from my hotel. I went to 2 Bible studies (one may have been a service, not sure) and I helped them get ready for a big rummage sale they were having. I think it was mostly clothes. The Salvation Army couple were really nice people. I am thankful for the Salvation Army that helps the homeless including some of the people from our town when they are needing help and far away from home.

God bless.

God bless you! I am glad that we can still help people, even amongst all our faults :) May God continue to work in your life :)

I hope you didn't take me wrong. I did not mean to imply that the Salvation Army doesn't do a lot of good when it comes to helping the needy. Thrift Stores are a God Send for the poor, but my concern is and was when they sell stuff that is strickly against Biblical principles or suggestive that sinful are okay, suggest as R rated movies and books.

I suspect that one of the reasons these items are sold rather than trashed is that much of the staff (which are not uniformed folks) are non-Christian. One of the local stores I know of Christian people have been let go and non-Christians are hired to replace them. At the present time I believe there is one Christian, other than management, is left on staff.

No I didn't take you wrong, but it was kind of you to explain just in case.

Also thank you for the explanation about what has happened in some of the stores.

God bless.

Don't take me wrong. The Salvation Army does a great work and is likely one of the top charities world wide. My complain is that some of the books and videos teach or use language which are totally anti Christian are sold in their stores, which give creditabilty to that which is not Christian.

I guess some of the problem is that non-Christians or church folk who have not matured are placed in management positions. This should not be so.
