• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello, I saw this forums on Google and thought it was a good idea to join you guys! I have been having problems all my life, in elementary school they said it was ADD. Then after many doctors and medications later they said I was depressed and gave me some anti depressants. Did not work for me, and just earlier this week i joined a group counseling and a doctor and was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I can relate to many of the symptoms even more so than depression or ADD. I have just started taking "Abilify" yesterday, and took my second pill today. First night was crazy because I did not sleep a wink all night, and woke up today and felt dizzy, nausous and like i have a flu or somehting. I really had my hopes on this medicne so amreally hoping it helps. Does anyonelse take this medicine as it is a popular for BP. I also read that yu can have water retention, and swell up your hands, legs, or even your face! Looking forward to talking to you and I hope God helps everyone with every mental illness...It really is a rather nasty deal

Hi and welcome to CF

I haven't tried Abilify myself, but I know with many types of medicine for mental illness there is a long list of side-effects. The normal thing is usually to get one or a few of these side-effects. Often the side-effects get less noticeable or disappears after some time too, or some disappears and you keep others. So hope you will get rid of the side-effects and that the meds will make you feel better. Good luck

Welcome

Be careful my new friend, Abilify can cause some nasty other effects than the ones you are after.

Watch out for sleeplessness, paranoia/panic attacks, weight, concentration problems, and giddiness in particular.

It is also a reasonable good anti-psychotic.

It seemed to stop working for me after several years and caused many panic attacks towards the end, even though I didn't have them at first and always awake with your heart beating in your chest, I hated that.

Try taking them first thing in the morning this helped a little with sleeping problems.

Best of luck.

Welcome to the forums. My son and I deal with bp2. We have both been on abilify. We both deal far more with the depression half of things. But wehn my son goes manic, he has more symptoms than I do on that scale of the spedtrum. He tried Abilify shortly after it came out and did okay with it. Seemed to help the manic half, not so much the depressed half. I tried it and it did not help me and made me too jittery. Meds are interesting that way.

Hi and welcome to CF. Good to see a new face around here.

I've never been on Abilify; I hope that it works for you, even if just a little. Don't be afraid, though, to talk with your pdoc about other meds if this one doesn't work.

I'm bipolar II like Alive Again, also dealing with more depression than (hypo)mania.

Also, if you want to learn more about bipolar, Bipolar Disorder for Dummies is a really good book for those just diagnosed. It may sound odd but even though I knew a lot about bipolar prior to reading the book, I learned a few things from it. So I definitely recommend it.

Once again, welcome.

Yes I forgot to tell you about the nausea, I was sick every morning for years because of this medication, but it seems that for most it dies down after a few months.

How much did they start you on? you could drop the amount and go up milligrams at the time, instead of 5 or 10 milligram in one go. I find that starting at a 10th of the dosage the doctors tell, and up them by a 10th each week if tolerated, works the best for me, this gives me far more control over the changes such medications cause, and still get me to a good dosage in the end without having to feel so terrible sick from them.

please dare to take control of your life, you must live it.

Good show! But i am about to take it cause my mom started yelling about me not taking it and stuff It is so hard to know what is the right thing to do I am only on 2mg, and experiencing crazy side effects, so hopefully maybe my body will adjust to the side effects. I just HATE how this medicine makes me feel, i must say i think it helps a bit, but i feel like i am like high or loopy or something. i really don't feel my self. but time will tell, just hoping i can keep my faith up, it is getting hard though

Dear friend please take careful heed, the symptoms you mention I have suffered as well, some anti-psychotics cause psychosis, as strange as this may sound. Your dosage is low so you may well be allergic to it. Please check out what happens soon after you take your medication.

Record how you are feeling and rate level of intensity, just a few times will tell you if you are going off from the stuff, if so dump it regardless of what they say. I have almost lost my life, a few times because the pdoc wouldn't believe me about medications, believe it is not worth anything to go mad again, and in one instance I went from level to suicidally manically depressed in just a few hours, having table knifes call my life, that is how wacked it got from one small pill!!!

Please do take care.
