• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I was recently hospitalized for severe depression/anxiety that lasted for 5 months. Nothing worked for those 5 months i was being treated till i finally had to be hospitalized. The Doc. there (who was excellent) took me off all the anti depressants and other meds. (She doesn't believe in anti-depressants for bipolars). Anyway, when she mentioned Lithium i was extremely reluctant due to the side effects i've heard about, not to mention the age of the medication.

Anyway, I finally gave in, took the lithium and as she raised the dose, within days the depression lifted and the crying bouts/anxiety/panic attacks stopped. I was amazed with the efficacy. When i went in there, not only was i severely depressed, but an emotional mess...literally crying on a continual basis.

I know i have to get my bloodwork checked and all that. But i'm writing here to those of you on lithium to inquire what your experience has been. Any side effects? Any weight gain, acne, vision problems, thyroid issues? My biggest concern is weight gain since i gained aaaaaaaaaa lot of weight when i was on depakote yrs. ago. My 2nd concern is the acne since i already have an acne issue.

One thing I've been noticing for the past 2 weeks is that i sometimes get shakey hands and even legs. (good thing i'm not a surgeon). My pdoc said that was from the lithium. (He currently thinks it's too high) I also noticed my handwriting has been really bad (sloppy) and i make mistakes when writing more than normal.

I know i need to start researching everything i can about lithium and the side effects...haven't gotten around to it. I only knew about the basics before i started taking it. If anyone knows of any links that would be appreciated.

So please do share how well (or not) lithium has been working for you and if any of the side effects have presented themselves. Thanx
