I think "talent," most of the time, is just the product of hard work and time, which are the products of desire. The only reason, really, I can draw like I do is that I liked drawing and kept doing it.
And now, after years of doing so, I can draw pretty much anything I like just as I want to draw it. Sadly, the small flame of creative desire can be snuffed out by the initial difficulties of developing skill. But its never too late to take up the pencil again and draw just for the fun of it.
I don't think you can find Bristol board with tooth (surface texture). It's why I like to use it.
I find paper with "tooth" creates a "graininess" to the application of color. If I'm trying to get smooth color gradients and high detail with pencil crayons, surface texture gets in the way.
I do use illustration board with some texture, too, but for ink work mostly, or solely graphite drawing.
Glad you like the cartoons. I'd post more...serious art but the image files are too large and compressing them is more "techy" than I want to be.

You wouldn't believe how many horrible drawings I've done. But even they are fun (so long as no one ever sees them), teaching me how to improve.
