Just for Fellowship Thread

We are going out for lunch to the Roadhouse Diner and then we are going for a hike up Shannon Falls. Shannon Falls is a popular honey moon spot in this area. It is beautiful. I'm so excited. We rarely do the date thing. Sam, our baby, will be coming with us but that will just add to the fun, I'm sure. I will try to take some pictures and post them tomorrow night!

I'm going to go see LOTR-3 tomorrow on a date with my hubby. We got a babysitter! Whooo Hooooo! He's been itching to see it for awhile. I just love that fantasy stuff. Through in kingdoms and good wardrobe and I'm there. I'm not kidding. When I was a little girl all I did was draw castles and princesses.

Have any of you played the games in the Rec. Room? I've been having a fun time in there. I usually just stay in the theology and fellowship rooms. But, it's kind of fun just to play around.

LOTR 3 ... my 2 girls and my husband loves those movies, I am a bit behind as I havent seen any yet. They have the first 2 on dvd...I need to pick a day to watch them..probably would be better to watch them on different days though...I know they are very lengthy and they have extra footage in them. I want to see them..I just havent had the time to watch them yet.

Anyway, Wisdom Seeker have a fun evening with the hubby.

I saw one from the LOTR series. I thought it was too scarey. We watched it on video. I had to keep leaving the room until the scarey parts were over. Other than that, I loved it. I really enjoyed the story.

Hey yall!!! Hope everyone's weekend is going good! I cant stay too long.. i have to finish a bible study for tonight that im doing.... but i wanted to come in and say hi! LOL I LOVE LOTR I didnt think i would like them.. but a friend told me i had to watch them .... lol so i rented the first two.... and they are neat.... I just finished the second one last night.. I cant wait to see the third one.. was gonna see it iwth my friend.. but He and I arent talking right now... so maybe i shall go alone this time. Anyhow Ill be back I promise!!!! Hugs to All!

I've been here in Israel for just over 17 years & cannot remember how I acquired my taste for Turkish coffee. But now I'm hooked on it so much that when I travel to the USA (was last there just over 2 years ago) or to South Africa (DW's from Cape Town, we were last there 1.5 years ago), I take a package with me. Any kosher grocery store (that has imported stuff from Israel) or any Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/Arab grocery will have ready-ground Turkish coffee. The easier way to make it is simply to put a rounded teaspoonful in your favorite mug, add sugar to taste and add boiling (it really must be boiling, as opposed to merely very hot) water & stir. Wait a minute or so for the grounds to settle & drink up!

For Shabbat, we made egg noodles & meatballs (always a favorite with Da Boyz) for Friday night dinner & a chicken pie for Saturday lunch. We had guests from Jerusalem (we live in one of the 'burbs http://www.jr.co.il/ma/; see pics of our neighborhood at http://www.jr.co.il/ma/pic/ma012.htm) over. They have a daughter who is the same age as Naor, i.e. 3. When I was bringing Naor home from pre-nursery school Friday afternoon, I reminded him that Hadassah (aka "Dassie") & her Mommy and Daddy were coming over. He asked me where his friend Dassie would sleep. I said in the spare room with her Mommy & Daddy. He replied: "No. She will sleep with me in my bed." I smiled. I repeated this to Wendy & she said in jest: "You men are all alike! Only one thing on your minds!"

Wendy & I want to lose Da Boyz one afternoon (after my colleague at the office gets back from a short vacation & can cover for me) and treat ourselves to a good soak at some natural hot pools (see http://www.jpost.com/com/Archive/16.Apr.1998/Tourism/Article-8.html not far from here.

Yesterday, we (Jews all over the world) read Exodus 6:2-9:35 in synagogue. Our Sages ask why it was Aaron, and not Moses, who stretched his staff out over the Nile & turned it into blood (see 7:19) & say that it is to teach us not to be ingrates. The Nile received & helped Moses when he was in the basket when he was a baby. Moses could not smite the river that had saved his life. So, it was up to Aaron to turn the Nile to blood.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. The playground looks fun. I love seeing scenery pictures, maybe I will share some of mine. If and when I get a chance to go through them and scan them in.

You said you had egg noodles and meatballs...I like meatballs, well actually the whole family does. We usually have our meatballs with BBQ sauce and eat them on a sandwich bun.

Child of The King and Redgoddess. What a great weekend! I had a super time on my date yesterday. I forgot my camera, so there are no pictures to share. It was snowing in the morning , raining in the early afternoon, but it became sunny after lunch and was beautiful for our hike. The little one discovered puddles and we just let him go for it. He ended up soaking wet and muddy. We had to stip him down in the parking lot before we put him in his car seat. I'm glad I brought and extra snow suit for him to wear home. The falls were so pretty. At the restaurant there were little bunnies hanging around the door, looking for hand outs. They were so cute and fluffy. Sam loved it. I don't think he's seen bunnys before, except on teletubbies. Church was awsome this morning.
We came home, had lunch and went out for a walk. I'm glad to be indoors now, where it's warm. We are listening to Cross Movement.

You're welcome! There are a lot of playgrounds elsewhere in Maaleh Adumim (like this one http://www.jr.co.il/ma/pic/ma02503.htm & in Jerusalem. Da Boyz like running around at the playgrounds. Wendy & I think that it's very important to take them out (weather-permitting) as often as possible.

I remember one late Saturday afternoon/early Saturday evening two winters ago. I was sitting in one of the synagogues in our neighborhood (not the one in the picture in the link in my previous post) waiting for the (short) Saturday evening prayers. Yohanan (it was right around his 5th birthday) & his friend Yishai (the Hebrew form of Jesse) came running in. 'Nani (as we call him) asked me if he & Yishai could go stomp puddles (it had been raining). I tucked his pants inside his Winnie-the-Pooh boots & sent him on his way. About 15 minutes later, I went outside & 'Nani and Yishai were nowhere to be found. I went home (at the time, we lived right across from the synagogue) & 'Nani wasn't there either. Wendy & I (and Naor, then 1) got the multi-wicked candle, wine & spices for the Havdalah ceremony (which ushers out the Sabbath & ushers in the workweek, see http://www.jewfaq.org/prayer/havdalah.htm). We figured that 'Nani was hearing Havdalah at Yishai's house. We had just finished saying Havdalah when knock-knock-knock. I opened the door & confronted a mud-covered apparition that vaguely resembled our oldest son. He wasn't just dirty or muddy; he was (literally!) covered in mud from head-to-toe. He had it in his hair, on his face, etc. If I didn't know that his winter coat was red & his pants were blue, I wouldn't have been able to tell! I noticed that he wasn't wearing his Winnie-the-Pooh boots but was standing there in mud-covered socks. He looked like he was ready to cry & was probably afraid that we would be angry at him (we weren't, shocked maybe, but not angry). I asked him what he had been doing & where his boots were. All he could manage was: "Yishai and I were in the mud at his house. My boots are in the mud. Wendy hauled him into the bathroom, put him in the tub & began hosing the mud off him with the shower, all the while saying things like, "Look at you! How could you get so filthy, etc." I grabbed my coat & went over to Yishai's. His father was waiting for me. Our two little geniuses had to decide to roll in the mud in an unfinished section of Yishai's back yard; they had laid down & logrolled in the mud. When they sttod up, their boots stuck fast in the thick, gooey, sticky, viscous mud, so they stepped out of them. Yishai's father & I took a broom handle & poked around in the mud for about 10 minutes until we found 4 boots. Inside their house, I could hear his wife hosing Yishai down in the shower (sounding very much like Wendy: "What were you doing? What were you thinking?" etc.). I just looked at Yishai's father and said, "They [i.e. our wives] wouldn't understand about little boys & the mud. It's a male thing." Yishai's father replued, "Absolutely."

This coming Saturday, we (Jews all over the world) will read Exodus 10:1-13:16. In describing the effects of the plague of darkness, Exodus 10:23 says:

"...no man saw his brother..."

Our Sages offer a metaphorical & homiletical interpretation to this phrase and say that this is the worst kind of darkness, when we do not see our brothers, our fellow men, and neither hear their cries nor see their suffering, everyone remaining wrapped up in ourselves and our own affairs, in spiritual darkness.

Previously, as Moses and Aaron were negotiating with Pharoah prior to the plague of locusts, Pharoah asks who would go to serve God. When Moses replies that everybody will go (animals too!), Pharoah angrily dismisses them and says that only the adults (men only) may go (10:11). Pharoah pointedly refuses to let the children go to serve God (10:10). Very recently, in our times, we have seen that the anti-religion Communist goverrnments in eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia didn't care so much about adults practicing their respective faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, whatever) but were prepared to use strong repressive measures to prevent the religious instruction of children. Like Pharoah before them, they knew that if faith in God is confined to adults only, it will, very quickly, wither and die. The key to the survival of any faith is the transmission of that faith to children who will teach it to their children who will teach it to their children, etc. The Communists, like Pharoah, understood this very well and, thus, were prepared to use terrible repression to sever this chain of tradition & prevent belief in God from being instilled in the younger generations. Like Pharoah before them, the Communists failed miserably and we see that religion is flourishing all over eastern Europe and the countries of the former USSR as people flock to the same synagogues, churches, mosques and temples that the Communists had hoped to turn into old-age homes.

Did somebody mention LotR a while back? I love Tolkien! I read The Hobbit & LotR way back when I was in college. I've seen the first two films so far & am impressed. I actually took a course on J.R.R. Tolkien & C.S. Lewis (who were good friends) back at GWU. Our professor asked us what scene in the books we would like to be present at to see & I was the only student in the class who chose the scene I did, namely when the Ents destroy Isengard. The Ents are my favorite characters & always have been.

It's snowing here, again. It's so pretty when all is covered in a fresh layer of white. Here is a photo, looking out the window where I'm sitting at the computer, of our front yard.
The flakes are getting bigger and bigger. That means it is getting warmer. This snow may turn to rain by this afternoon.

All this talk about snow is making this ex-patriate Pittsburgher green with envy!

Snow is very rare here in Jerusalem. It snows on Mt. Hermon, the northern Golan Heights & the upper Galilee every winter; it's no big thing up there. But it's very rare down here. In the 1991-92 winter (which had the most precipitation since the Turks started keeping records about 160 years ago), Jerusalem got TWO whopper snowstorms. It was wonderful! Last February, Jerusalem got a good dusting; however, I wasn't around to see any of it. I was off in the Jordan Valley doing my annual stint of reserve duty in the army. We had rain, mud, mud, more mud, rain, mu...you get the picture. (I could see snow on the heights of Gilead across the Valley in Jordan but that was as close as I got.) But DW took Da Boyz up to Jerusalem to play in the fluffy white stuff. DW works on Mt. Scopus (right next to the Mt. of Olives; the Hebrew University & Hadassah Hospital are there), which happens to be the highest point in the city. Yohanan (had just turned 6) & Naor (was 2.5) had a ball. While they were romping in the snow, Yohanan found a plastic bag & told DW: "Mommy, let's fill this with snow & take it home & put it in the freezer for Daddy when he comes home from the army!" (So, when I got home there was a bag of ice in the freezer...)
