Just conducted a search engine search. A pop-up appeared with my computers location

and my provider listed. I copied the Internet protocol address and put that in a search engine and sure enough that's me. Though I wonder if my physical address can be found using that it is still pretty wonky stuff.
It was a company asking me to take a survey and they would send the link to my registered email account with that server.

That wakes you up in the morning. Looking for a Bible scripture and all the sudden someone claims they're looking at where you come from with your machine?

Is there a way I can stop my computer from giving out that address?

Thanks for that. When the pop-up survey window message said they could send to my registered email address that was puzzling. My IP address showing there was bad enough. But to imply they knew the email addy was a bit of a surprise.Of course there was that button that you could click to agree to take their survey. Not likely I'll be pressing that anytime soon.

Other computers Have to have you IP address, that's how the Internet works.
You initiate a web request, it goes to their servers with what page you're wanting and your IP address (along with a bunch of other stuff)
To send you that data back their server has to know where to send the data.

Hmm interesting. apparently CF is now remapping image request.

I use to live near there many years ago. Balboa Park use to be one of the armpits of San Diego. I remember one time going to the park as a kid and seeing a group of guys with mohawks who were either drunk or high on drugs. They were laughing and indecently exposing themselves to everyone who walked by.
Hopefully they have cleaned the place up since then.

If you feel uncomfortable about the pop up,try a blocker...it sounds as if that company was trying to give your machine some adware of worse yet,a virus...DO NOT RESPOND TO IT!
If it sounds or looks suspicious,it more than likely is.

Thank you for the response. I didn't click on it. I was just concerned that it showed my computers address too.
Do you know if there is something my system can apply that hides that from what may be predatory sites such as that appeared to be?

And I have another post here asking about Task manager hanging and slowing my computers shut down. Even though TM isn't open on my system. Do you know how to fix that?

How did you find that out? I can understand your concern. Rerouting? Here? Why would it do that?

Are you running an anti malware program?if not,try MalwareBytes..keep it updated and run it scan your machine at least every week..It's free and has saved my bacon on numerous times..
No matter how careful we are with our browsing,nasty stuff can and will get snuck in there.
About the TM,I'm not sure.

Even if there is nasty stuff there,the program will take care of it.
Keep the program..it also passively blocks known bugs,but only if you keep it updated..new ones seem to come out of the wood work regularly.

You can amend your HOST files to block automatic analytics from google, facebook, twitter, etc.

These websites employ analytics on other websites through widgets and ads; the run background. You can block these specific processes in the HOST files.

You can also block about 95% of malware by using HOST files. The way it works is the host file will receive the process, but block it from running. So, scripts and such won't even run viral processes of you block the host.

You can also use a VPN to remain anonymous. VPN stands for "virtual private network."

Or, you can use a (bouncing) proxy in order to stay annonymous, and protect some of your information.

Using all your options together can do a lot for privacy.

However, if you have Windows 10, especially home eddition, you CANNOT use any of these to keep your information from being stored on Microsoft's database. You can't make host files that will stop the processes from Microsoft; Microsoft will change your settings to accomodate.

Windows 10 also has a backdoor, so that protection is futility if someone has access to this backdoor (for now, only DHS and a couple of other agencies have the backdoor.)

So, it depends on your machine, OS, and your own methods of protection.
