I don't really care to watch The Drew Cary show,
but I caught the opening theme song to where part
of the lyrics was "living in sin with a safety pin..."

Really. How does one do that?
A tailor cohabiting with his girlfriend?

The song was written in 1977, the height of the punk rock explosion in England. The safety pin is a reference to that, as safety pins were associated with punk. Song originally released as "England Rocks", later re-recorded and released as "Cleveland Rocks".

Means your living (unmarried) with someone and have a baby.
Spot on! :)
Living ain't wrong with an excised song (Cleveland rocks!)
the whole line (in the song) is:
Cleveland rocks! Cleveland rocks!
Momma knows, but she don't care. She's got her worries too.
Seven kids, and a phony affair, and the rent is due.
All the little chicks with the crimson LIPS go
Cleveland rocks! Cleveland rocks!
Livin' in sin with a safety pin goin'
Cleveland rocks! Cleveland rocks!
tulc(always liked Ryan Styles in this and "Who's Line Is It?") :D

I'd be happy to admit if my interpretation is wrong, but I'm not convinced it is by this. Tulc cites Kaplan, and Kaplan cites Peters, but Kaplan and Peters don't agree. Peters says "The "safetypin" refers to the financialy unraveled group, having to be held together with the minimum amount monetary resources." [sic] Nothing about having a baby. The safety pin connection with poverty and punk seems stronger to me.

And also, "living in sin", in America anyway, has always meant "shacking up", i.e., living together and having sex outside of marriage.

I think the it might harken back to the "Old Testament" or original song:
England Rocks said:
Energy calling me, back where I came from
It's such a crude attitude, it's back where it belongs
All the little chicks with the crimson lips go
England Rocks, England Rocks
She's living in sin with a safety pin
England Rocks, England Rocks
(etc)

Momma knows but she don't care, she got her worries too
Seven kids and a phoney affair, and the rent is due
All the little kids growing up on the skids
Going England Rocks, England Rocks
American dreams, moody James Deans
Going England Rocks, England Rocks

England Rocks, England Rocks

I got some badges from World War II
I wear 'em just like my Granddad do
He was a villain and I am too
Oh England Rocks, England Rocks

So grab a place, find a space
And yell and scream for more

England Rocks, England Rocks
England Rocks, England Rocks
(to fade)
been here:
Cleveland Rocks - Wikipedia
it's actually a pretty interesting article. :)
