  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just a suggestion about polls

Good evening friends,

As a result of the discussion in the poll thread asking to vote on splitting the forum I would like to make the suggestion that, before there are more polls, a decision be made as to what constitutes a majority.

For Moderator elections, we have no choice. The 70% is mandated by the forum guidelines. As for internal polls, there is no rule covering this. Thus, the validity of each and every poll can be called into question.

Thanks for your kind attention

I don't understand what's been happening here. Are we splitting or not? Why is the poll thread locked?

It's over, because the Traditional rules for who is allowed to do what in the forum is not fair, as it would be the exact same thing that they listed in their forum.

For the rule polls, did we not vote that above 50% was a win for the rule? Whereas the election threads were 70% to avoid split issues.

To be very honest, I think that the 51% for rules is okay. In most cases, if a rule can get that it's good enough.

As for the split poll, I'd think it should be more of a majority than 51%. To be clear, I am not saying this to be in favor of either side. It just simply makes sense. If a election poll is considered important enough to have a 70% rule, shouldn't something as durastic as a forum split be judged the same way?

Since nothing further was said here, I am going to create the next Rules Poll #6 with the statement that 51% is needed for each rule to be adopted and edited into the wiki, which is basically what we have been doing with all the other previous Rules Polls.

I think that's fine, Daryl. We all agreed on it at the beginning, if my memory serves me right. :) It's really the other polls that's up for debate.

Is there an agreement here that the rules POLLS require 51%, but that major POLLS, such as the splitting of forum POLL, requires 70%? If so, then do we also need to define what constitutes other major POLLS, or should that be decided on a case by case basis?

I think if anything the recent aborted split forum vote where it came to 51% should indicate that a tiny margin is not an acceptable rate for a proposals acceptance. To be safe I would say something should have a 60% vote for approval when doing a two item vote where one vote is against and one vote is for.

As a forum we have to do better then having 1% difference between those in favor verses those opposed. Surely there could be something done to create a difference of at least 10%.

70% for major changes is a good idea.
