Judge not
One day, a tornado swept through a sleepy southern town, destroying a lot of property along the way. One casualty was the house of the local moon shiner. Right afterwards, a young boy came running up to the preacher. "Terrible news! Terrible news!" he shouted.
"You mean about the house being destroyed?" asked the preacher. "Yes," said the boy. "I've already heard," said the preacher. "And let me just say, that moon shiner got exactly what he deserved." "But, sir..." the boy said. "No, buts about it," said the preacher.
"This is God's righteous judgment on that sinner." "But, sir," the boy insisted. "Don't contradict me," said the preacher, "Clearly, God has punished him for his evil deeds." "Maybe," said the boy, "but sir, it's not the moon shiner's house I'm talking about." "Then what's the terrible news?" He answered, "The tornado hit your house, too!"
Jesus said, "Judge not, lest you be judged...for with the judgment you pronounce, you yourself will be judged." Here was one case where that lesson really hit home.
Even though it is only a story, it reminds us of an important truth: that judging others or second guessing God is a very tricky business, one that can easily come back to bite us.
Second guessing God are among the most common temptations we human beings face, and the most difficult to overcome.
