Everyone Christian knows and loves John 3:16. But do you know John 3:13?

And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

According to this passage no one gets into heaven but Jesus. So, we're all doomed. Discuss.

NLT
For only I, the Son of Man, have come to earth and will return to heaven again.
Footnote:
Some manuscripts add who lives in heaven.

NKJV
No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

NASB
No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.

RSV
No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man.

Webster
And no man hath ascended to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, [even] the Son of man who is in heaven.

Young and
no one hath gone up to the heaven, except he who out of the heaven came down -- the Son of Man who is in the heaven.

Darby
And no one has gone up into heaven, save he who came down out of heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.

ASV
And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, who is in heaven.

HNV
No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

I hope these make it a bit clearer what it's saying.

Eh...I think you're a little off the mark here.

First of all, you're just looking at one tiny little verse that's part of a much larger whole. Heck, I could take just portions of verses from the Bible and tell you, "Did you know that the Bible says, 'there is no God?'" [Of course, we all know the full verse is, "The fool has said in his heart, There is no God."]

Beyond that, I think what the verse is saying is that no man has ever ascended up into heaven via his own volition, as Jesus did (within the context of the story of course--I'm an atheist ya know:p). I don't see anything in that verse that says, "nobody besides Jesus will ever get into heaven."

It's saying that we have to be baptised in the Holy Spirit and we have to believe in Jesus who gave His life for us, God sent His Son to us because He loved us and if we listen to what He has said we will enter the kingdom of God.

John 3:
5 Jesus answered, "I assure you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again. 8 The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." 9 "How can these things be?" asked Nicodemus. 10 "Are you a teacher of Israel and don't know these things?" Jesus replied. 11 "I assure you: We speak what We know and We testify to what We have seen, but you do not accept Our testimony. 12 If I have told you about things that happen on earth and you don't believe, how will you believe if I tell you about things of heaven? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven--the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life. 16 "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Anyone who believes in Him is not judged, but anyone who does not believe is already judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 "This, then, is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. 21 But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God."

You actually got my point exactly. Anyone can quote-mine the bible, it's not hard. In fact, getting a true meaning from it is the hard part.

This passage is also further complicated by the following, but that is for another discussion (emphasis mine, of course).

"And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." (2 Kings 2:11)
