  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

For the last six years, I have worked overseas at a school for missionary kids. For a couple different reasons, I felt I should move back home to the States. That was last June. Since then, I have been looking for work and didn't think it would be this hard.

I do not have a college degree but have experience as a librarian, office assistant and working with ESL students, so these are the jobs I've mainly applied for. I have had several interviews but no hire.

At first, I absolutely did not want to even think of working retail (horror stories, you know...) but then resigned to applying for those as well. No luck. I haven't even gotten an interview with any retailers apart from one seasonal job. I thought at least a retailer would hire me!

My niece has gotten several jobs; she currently has three at the moment. She also doesn't have a college degree. I don't understand.

This is partly a rant, btw, and partly me asking for prayers, advice...anything. :help: Would appreciate it.

I am a quiet introvert and really dislike interviews. They are really hard for me, but I do my research and practice, and pray like crazy. :prayer:

There are days when I'm filled with despair. I feel like I've done something wrong. I think, why hasn't God blessed me with a job yet? I know perfectly well that we don't earn blessings. It's not a result of something we have, or have not done, but the thought it still there....

I am learning to trust Him through difficult times and in waiting. Maybe I am just getting impatient, and maybe I should stop thinking about my bank account. :sigh:

Thanks for listening.

Oh, I also want to mention about the bank account, I am almost down to my last dollar. My parents have struggled financially as well and I don't want to be a burden to them. This is the reason I am so anxious to find a job... So I won't have to depend on them, and I can help out with food & gas.

Also, the job would be temporary until I can pay for further schooling; I would like to get a degree in education.

Do you have a portfolio that you bring to your interviews?

I definitely can relate to disliking interviews and feeling awkward. It got much easier for me when I created a portfolio with examples of my work from each of my prior jobs. I had written references from college, copies of my resume, lists of job duties, etc. Then when they asked me a question, I could pull something from the portfolio to take the focus off of me and have something to help guide my answers. I got comments on how prepared I was and almost every interview wanted a copy of something I showed them.

If you don't have one, I recommend putting one together. Having 4+ references helps too. Call up old jobs if you need to. Your interviewers will remember you and how prepared you were.

Keep us posted! I'll be praying for you.

Honestly, the job market's been terrible for many years now. It's so ridiculous!!! Even college grads have hard time trying to find jobs. What's more ridiculous is that many applicants for fast food jobs are people with degrees, and no, not all of them are recent grads.

The funny thing is, if you're a nurse -I know you're not, but this is just for how bad the economy is- all your jobs are taken by foreigners and Filipinos who can't speak English well. It's because the hospitals are 'broke' and not many people are insured or have enough money to cough up the dough, so they're hiring foreigners who would work for less pay.

If you're around 40 years and beyond, the employers discriminate you because you're 'too old.' And if you're a fresh grad, they won't hire you because you don't 'have experience.' Seriously, what?!

You will have to try and hassle them. Keep calling them until one of them gives in and gives you a job. It doesn't always work, but what do you have to lose?

I hope the best of everything for you!!

Me too. I remember when I couldn't find a job I just started to wash dishes somewhere, my hair got all filthy from it. Students threw their plates in a basket with water and I had to get them out and I worked very hard and got very little payed. Then someone said: Why don't you just believe God to give you a job? Well I hadn't thought about that. It was just impossible to find a job as a cartographer, the thing I studied, but I did and that same week, I had sent some letters to one really strange company too, where you work for people that let you work somewhere else and I had to draw cables, well that same week I could come on an interview with two companys, before I couldn't even come on an interview, there was just no work. I could even choose and the one I chose I only had to say a few sentences, the rest that man that was from the other company did, the boss was really easy and I got the job and it wasn't drawing cables, but really maps, the thing I studied for. Pray for a miracle and in the meantime look for what your hand can do. I only had to do the stupid dish washing job for two weeks, they called me there.
That was 15 years ago, now they tried to fire me in march, but I just trusted God again and now I can stay.
