  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey all,
I am 20, just going to start my second year of college, and I just don't know what kind of career path I want to go on. Do any of you have this same dilemma? I am just not sure what it is I want to work at that would be best for me. I have had 2 previous summer jobs, but overall did not like them, and I am just mad and frustrated at the whole job world, like I owe a company/job my life to serve them, when I would rather be somewhere else, and that doesn't seem like any kind of life. Also I know at this stage I am not likely to get work I like anyways, but then I would just rather not. It just bugs me. So, I am having trouble with this. I wish there wasn't even jobs, it frustrates me so much. So, I heartily dislike the work world already, and I don't know what I would want to go in for a life career either.

You are perfectly ok.
For now, just keep knocking out any general courses you can. You see, I took a bunch of upper level stuff and changed majors a few times. That makes things that much worse caus eyou end up with a lot of worthless classes.
What do you like or enjoy? Study that. An education is about learning, not lining your pockets with a fat wad of cash from the job you wanna get.
You seem to have already been enlightened regarding jobs though.
Do what you like. It makes a huge difference. Life is funny, but it works itself out.
I'm 31, a senior in college, and I think I know what want to do when I grow up.

as of last year, i had no clue what i wanted to do till someone said "what do you love doing" and i said "i love skiing". that got me thinking "hey, what can i do with skiing???" then it dawned on me that i could run and operate a ski resort or even own one or at least be in a partnership. ive been skiing my entire life so i have that experience, but thats not enough in this world. so now im a double business major, going into my second year, and im loving it. i just pray that God can set me up in a position like that. even if i end up working for like a fortune 500 company, accounting firm, etc... i know ill be happy because ive really learned to love business and everything to do with it.

Thanks guys! :) I am not interested in a big pay check, I am interested in doing what I love to do. I did make a list of just things I think I would really enjoy, and I came up with seeing-eye dog trainer, and American history, I love animals and history, so maybe something there...;)

Well at least you know what you like/love ... i'm studying biology and want to go into medicine but the thing is ... I'm not feeling bio anymore (it might have to do with the bad profs i've had) and med school is so hard to get into. I like writing and reading and daydreaming but I don't know if that would work for a career and I don't want to major in english. I hate decisions. Why can't I volunteer for a living. Best of luck to you

I went through something similar. I'm 25, currently an officer in the U.S. Army. When I went to college I was on an ROTC scholarship, and knew I would have a job as a lieutenant waiting for me. It freed me up to study what I wanted - history. My time in the military is winding down, and I will probably use my experience in the Army and academic background to enter the intelligence community in D.C. - I've applied to the FBI, DIA, CIA, etc.

Whatever classes you enjoy the most, think about why - do you like the reading in your history classes? The challenge of a new problem in math? The fun of being in a lab for chem? Open debate with people in political science?

Don't worry about money - I'll take a pay cut when I leave the Army, but I'll be happy. In America, we make the mistake of living to work sometimes. So many people are so stuck in their jobs, they forget why we do it. You have to work to live - a career is a means to an end - living a life you can be proud of.

I know what you mean, far too many people have jobs where they can't wait to get out of there, sitting at a desk doing something while their minds are elsewhere dreaming about what they would rather be doing. I don't want that to be me. Well, I do enjoy also discussing Christian issues on these boards...hmm... :)
