  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is interesting that the common belief use to be that the Jews had some hand in making the great pyramids of Egypt. This idea has been rejected by Egypt and many others. In fact, the new idea is that slaves didn't even make the pyramids.

My questions: What time period were the Jews in Egypt before the Exodus?

Does this time period overlap any part of the time period in which the pyramids were built?

Is there still anyone who believes the Jews built the pyramids? Why?

Hello:

There is no scriptural basis for Hebrews building the pyramids -- I believe that they are thought to predate the Hebrews in Egypt. A quick check of sources states that the current thinking is that the pyramids of Giza are from the 25th century BC.

Most sources consider the Exodus to be roughly 13th to 15th century BC. The Bible states that the Hebrews spent some 430 years in Egypt, and built the cities of Ramses and Pythom...

I wouldn't bet the farm on this either way, however I certainly would NOT bet that the Hebrews were pressed into building the pyramids of Giza.

There has been much movement of these dates and there is no universal consensus of any of them.

Shalom,

^^^ What he said.

To add to that, Egyptians/Egyptologists will always deny that Jews had any part of anything in Egypt whatsoever. Regardless of the overwhelming evidence, modern Egyptology states that the Jews were never in Egypt.. and so well, they have nothin else to do but deny it.
That's interesting.
The Bible says the Hebrews lived in the Land of Goshen.
Have they looked for evidence there?

Joseph was said to rule Egypt.

In Egyptian history Imhotep, during the reign of djoser-3rd dynasty-(The first step Pyramid) ruled Egypt. He was a foreigner and a stand out figure in Egyptian history

On that pyramid was found this inscription;

Imhotep, chancellor of the king of lower Egypt. Chief under the king administrator of the great palace.
Herediatory lord, high priest of Heliopolis. Imhotep the builder, the sculptor, the maker of stone vases (SEE-GEN 41: 37-45)

This was Joseph if the bibles right---It was Joseph.

An empty coffin was found within sakkara-the first step pyramid. Points to being Imhoteps tomb.
But no body?

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you."
20 Then they set out from Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness.

Joseph's remains were taken to Canaan. Besides, his Egyptian name is given in the Bible. Gen. 41:45: Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah (NIV).
Just out of curiosity, I looked this up.
Adam Clarke thinks this was not a given name, but rather, a title.

"I believe it also to be an Egyptian epithet, designating the office to which he was now raised; and similar to our compound terms, Prime-Minister, Lord Chancellor, High-Treasurer, Chief Justice, etc."

Who is Adam Clarke and why should I depend on his authority? No offense.
Adam Clarke is a trusted Bible scholar from the 1800's.
He was a regenerated believing Christian, a godly man.
He was expert in Greek, Hebrew, Latin and Aramaic languages.
He was well-read and studied many ancient documents
some of which are now extinct.
His commentaries give some of the best historical context I have ever read.

I highly recommend his work.
You can get his commentary for free, as well as others, through

I've seen and heard many times on Discovery shows about Egyptology that the hebrews probably had no part in building the pyramids. Egyptologists think that the pyramids were built by hard-working Egyptians themselves, in return for money or food or land. (Then again, I don't trust alot of Discovery stuff.)

For one thing the pyramids were made out of stone. The bible mentions that the Hebrews were told to go gather their own straw, since they were making buildings out of mud and straw. While this doesn't mean that the Hebrews had no part in the pyramids, it does mean that the majority of the Hebrews were probably building cities and houses, etc. for everyone to live in.

I should also add the Josephus writes that the Hyksos expulsion is the same thing as the hebrew exodus. The Hyksos expulsion was the only mass exit of Canaanite shepherds out of Egypt. Following the exodus the Hebrews spent 40 years in the desert, then Joshua took over and led the Hebrews into their Promised Land. According to archeology, the Hyksos expulsion is dated c. 1550 BC, and the fall of Jericho c. 1500 BC.
