Jesus was not conservative.
Jesus questioned and challenged the old ways.
He set us an example.
He was not conservative in his thinking or in his behavior or in his speech.
So why are any of us?

Edmund Burke said history repeats itself. Mark Twain said it rhymes.
But Jesus said we could break free from the past.
He said we can improve.

We can learn a lot from history, and we can honor the lessons it teaches us. But if we stay in the past, we cannot improve.
So why are any of us conservative?
Jesus wasn't.

This statement only comes from lack of study and understanding.

Our Lord and Savior had planned Jesus's birth, the cross and Jesus's sacrifice here Genesis 3:14-15. God didn't just throw Jesus down on earth one day and have Him woodstock His way around Israel. Also God's personality is the same now as it was then James 1:17; Malachi 3:6. If you look at the definition of liberal, clearly Jesus/God (talking about the same being here John 1:1) would not be liberal. As said before, God is apolitical, having you either obey the gospel or else receive the consequences of the decision not to obey.

JESUS CHRIST the same yesterday , today and forever
IT is true he was not CONSERVATIVE.......
but he was NOT LIBERAL EITIHER........
both views have long failed the church.
as one said above...............HIS KINGDOM was not of the world
he warned out against sin, constantly corrected
and healed..........
both liberal churches and conservative churches have failed the people.
one allows every sin under the sun and calls it love
the other sins and yet points out only certain sins.......BOTH are long wrong......
TIME FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD to preach ONLY BIBLCAL SOUND DOCTRINE
remember
THE HOLY SCRIPS make us WISE unto salvation THROUGH faith in CHRIST, amen.

TEACHING, TEACHING US..............to DENY ungodliness and wordly lusts
to be LIVING RIGHTEOUSLY , GODLY , HOLY in this present world.

Jesus did not question or challenge the old ways. He only challenged what was not in line with the will of God.
THAT is the most beautiful way I have ever truly heard it said.............IT is PURE TRUTH.

Jesus was apolitical. He told His fellow Jews to pay their taxes to hated Caesar.

Jesus rebuked religious revisionism. He clearly rebuked the Pharisees for adding to God's Law and making their man-made rites more important to observe. In that sense Jesus was a conservative. He also used the written Word of God to rebuke them and established His truth claims in the same manner.

When confronted by Satan Jesus Christ rebuked Satan using the Torah. Again very Conservative. He would be of course as both truly God and truly human.

Edmund Burke said history repeats itself. Mark Twain said it rhymes.
But Jesus said we could break free from the past.
He said we can improve.

Jesus said what is impossible for man is possible for God. Sounds like He meant we need Him.

Your quote sounds like something I would tell my baseball team or some "life coach" or yogi tells their seminars.

Jesus came to save the lost sheep.

"Jesus was a Capricorn
He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
And never wore no shoes

Long hair, beard and sandals
And a funky bunch of friends
Reckon we'd just nail him up
If he came down again"

Yes, I agree that some things are timeless and universal, like Jesus said.
But the old ways are not necessarily timeless and universal.
We should take care to question the old ways, like Jesus did.
We should ascertain whether our old ways align with Jesus's message.
Many of our old social customs do not, yet we cling to them despite the trouble they cause us.
Why do we do it?

How does that work with a political spectrum that is constantly in flux? Being liberal and conservative now have very different meanings depending on the era, and depending on where you live.

A conservative in Canada or Australia is quite different from a Conservative in the United States. Ditto with Liberals. Liberals have different positions now than they did in the 50's, or than in the civil war.

Does Jesus' position change with the changing political climates? How would that work seeing as we haven't heard from him in 2000 years? Does Jesus' teachings change depending on changing political climates? How does that work?

What are you defining as "old ways."

A few examples would help.

The former dean of religious life at my college wrote a book making some of these points, titled Jesus Was a Liberal: Reclaiming Christianity for All. I'm currently taking a Public Policy course about how truth relates to ethical decision-making by individuals, institutions, and society, and the author will be leading a discussion on the impact of religion on truth. We haven't gotten to that part of the class yet since the spring quarter just began, but I'm looking forward to it. :)

For instance, there is an ancient tendency for wealth to coalesce into the hands of a few. We allow the Few to accumulate and hoard the resources needed by the Many.
The Many must scrabble and struggle and suffer and obey the wealthy Few, and they do so, in misery, until they can do it no more.
Then there is tumult and trouble.
Radical change ensues.
The wealth changes hands and the process begins all over again.

Why do we have to keep doing this?
Why can't we do better, like Jesus said?
Why can't we use Jesus's message to create a stable society?
Why do we have to keep reliving the past?

Another example of our "old ways" is the use of violence.
We still use violence to correct our children. We hit them to teach them "right."
We teach them violence.
Why do we do that?

We use violence to "solve" our problems or to get what we want.
Why do we do this?

We know better.

Why do we do it?

The ancient ways, before Adam and Eve fell in the garden is the whole purpose Jesus Christ came...to reconcile us back to The Father, our creator. That fallen Adam is what we are born and through Jesus Christ, a NEW Adam/man. The trouble with old, social customs is that they were devised doctrines from the mind of man and do not align with Jesus's message.

Jesus promises to cause us to be overcomers by the power of the Spirit...the same spirit that rose Christ from the grave. The old ways we need to look into are, the faith of Abraham who believed and trusted God in all things. FAITH in Jesus Christ, King of Kings and LORD of Lords. If we believe we will always be sorry sinners, then that is unbelief.

Jesus did not involve himself in politics, was neither liberal or conservative. He simply obeyed God...HE was tested, tried and tempted just like we are. When Pilate sent his men to arrest Jesus, HE wanted no one to defend HIM. HE said not a word...though HE knew what HE would suffer, HE didn't question The Father, but simply said, thy will, not mine, be done. We must learn (by the grace of God) to walk the same way. HE promises to cause it to be possible. Do we BELIEVE it?
