Scripturally this idea is based upon Ephesians 4:7-9 and 1 Peter 3:18-20.

There's also the Apostle's Creed which states:
"was crucified, died, and was buried he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead".

In Luke 16:19-31 (Lazarus and the Rich Man) Jesus gives a description of Hades and Abraham's Bosom where the souls of the dead dwell. The idea as I understand it is between the time of the crucifixion and the resurrection, Jesus went into Abraham's Bosom and brought everyone there up to Heaven.

There's also what's known as the Harrowing of Hell.

Those who argue aginst this idea cite Luke 23:43 where Jesus tells the thief on the cross , “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise”. Meaning Jesus went straight up to Heaven. However... others argue the paradise Jesus spoke of was Abraham's Bosom.

That's my understanding of it, and therefore is subject to error.

I came across this thing where after dying on the cross Jesus descended into hell.
Could you explain more about the purpose and significance of this?
According to the Bible He did not go to what we call hell. He went to "Hades" -- the grave.

For me, he descended to the dead.
And not just "for you" my friend. IT is the greek saying He went to hades -- the grave Where David is Acts 2:27 to this very day.

Matthew 16:18, Acts 2:27, Acts 2:31, Revelation 1:18, and Revelation 20:13-14
