  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello there!

My boys are now 13 and 10 so it has been a while since I had to deal with such issues, but we did experience all three!

Both my boys were exactly the same at birth, 22 inches long and 8.8 pounds. Both of them had Jaundice and were kept in the hospital for 7 extra days after delivery under special lights.

For the thrush, you should have been given mouth drops to help clear up the problem. If I remember correctly, the babies did not want to eat much at the time.

Using just a little bit of ambasol (sp) (the stuff the numbs the gums when teething) seemed to work well to numb the inside of the mouth long enough to feed.

Most likely you are using pain drops of some sort to provide comfort for the circumcision and that should help as well for the thrush - if that does cause discomfort.

A baby tooth brush is most likely a good idea to use once the thrush clears up so it does not return.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery for your little one!

My baby had mild jaundice (because of his early dehydration) but did not need treatment, but did get tested several times in the first week just in case. He had a thrush problem too and it took a while to clear up because I kept forgetting to give him his medicine as often as they prescribed. I had to buy two bottles of it because of this and it was pretty expensive. Don't worry too much, there's a lot of wild things going on with new babies. Just take everything in stride and lay in your bed every time the baby sleeps even if you only read.

Hmmm now I am thinking David had mild thrush. It lasted more than a month and no one was concerned. Nothing on the tongue, just some weird white stuff in the cheeks. I got medicine for thrush from the doctor. There was no fussiness with it and he didn't seem to mind at all. Just rubbed yellow stuff in his cheeks with q tips.

You can also buy Gentian Violet (I think that's how it's spelled). So far the only place I've found it is Walmart kind of by the bandaids. Swabbed inside the mouth with a q-tip, it'll clear up thrush very quickly. The only downside with it is it'll turn everything purple. GrapeFruit Seed Extract is another very good anti-fungal. You can dab it in the mouth (dilute it first - a couple drops with some water) or add a few drops to a bottle. Chances are if your little one has thrush in the mouth, he may end up with a yeast rash in the diaper area too ... . The doctor can prescribe Nystatin for thrush, but it's not always terribly effective - sometimes it'll work great and clear it all up, and sometimes it won't work. But if your physician will prescribe it, definitely try it. Oh, and be sure to boil all nipples and pacifiers until the thrush is completely healed (and usually for about a week after). Yeast can live through just about anything and will hide out in the smallest of crevices in the nipples of bottles or paci's. It's very easy to become reinfected with yeast.

awww poor baby. The only one of those i had to deal with was the jaundice. It was horrible having to leave him overnight at the hospital so he could be under those stupid lights. My son only had to stay an extra day but it was the worst day of my life. He had to go back twice for those heal prick blood tests and i hated that!! Jaundice is soo common for some reason, especially in preemies. Mine was born 5 weeks early. I read an article that said 80% of preemies get jaundice and 50% of on time babies get jaundice!! poor little babes! Hopefully it doesnt cause them too much trauma!!

My son had thrush as a newborn. We had medicine for him. Our peditrician had us scrape his tongue every time he ate and then give him a very, very small amount of plain yogurt. We just dipped our finger in the yogurt and put it in his mouth. The idea is that the good bacteria in yogurt will replace the bad bacteria.
