Indiana man fatally shot by sheriff's deputy identified as Jan. 6 defendant

  • A Jasper County sheriff's deputy fatally shot 42-year-old Matthew W. Huttle during a traffic stop in northwest Indiana on Sunday after an altercation in which Huttle reportedly resisted arrest and was armed.
"An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect," the Jasper County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Further investigation revealed the suspect was armed with a gun during the traffic stop.

He got 6 months for trespassing during the Capitol riots and was released last July. [His uncle got 2.5 years for assaulting police.]

Can't say I'm terribly shocked...

Those prone to criminal behavior who are prematurely released back into the streets prematurely...
(Whether it be due undeserved pardons, catch & release, or no-cash bail)

...often times have a high propensity of near-future recidivism.

(In other words, when someone gets arrested and detained for a reason, if you let them back out before experiencing the full punishment for their crime, they're much more likely to engage in that same kind of behavior in the very near future)

He strolled through the People's House taking selfies.
Not quite. Page 2 summarizes his participation, but you should feel free to read further.

In brief, he and his uncle discussed going inside and disrupting the events before getting to the Capitol grounds. He harassed officers more than once. He knowingly entered a building through a door he saw was broken by the mob. He entered private rooms inside the Capitol. His participations is about as bad as I have seen of anyone that didn't cross the line to felonies (interfering with police, destruction of property, or physical violence against police). If had, he likely would have been released from prison last week after the pardon. (His uncle did, and got about 2 years.)

He was sentenced to 6 months and he served 6 months.
In no small part because his criminal history was extensive (starting at the bottom of page 17).

Illegally. He was of the riot and should not have been in the people's house.

Yes. He served his time. I'm sure more will come out after body cam footage is released.

Huttle was at the Capitol that day with his uncle, and investigators obtained videos uploaded to his own Google account of him there. He could be heard in one of his videos saying that a group of people were going to the Capitol and that he was “going to see if we can get inside.”

He was identified on security video inside the building, including inside the Capitol’s crypt, the complaint said.

He was sentenced to 6 months and he served 6 months.

He was one of the ones who received a pardon.

Which means, No, he didn't experience the full brunt of the punishment.

He was sentenced in November 2023 to six months in federal prison, followed by 12 months of supervised release.

The pardon made his criminal status (and supervision provision) go away, which is why he wasn't being monitored and why, according to Indiana law, he was then able to "constitutionally carry" again.

The full punishment he received would've meant continuing to be stripped of his gun rights (which a probation officer would've seen to), and his supervision/probation period should've gone until sometime in April of this year.

I'm sure the court took all that into account as he was being persecuted prosecuted.

So supervision cut short by 2 or 3 months. Big whoop.

I can't be shocked when a terrorist dies a violent death.
Yeah those terrorists who don't use bombs or guns or knives. They're the worst kind. They lull you into a false sense of security, lol.

Evidently 2-3 months is enough time to get caught up with an armed altercation with police during a stop.

When these conversations about other types of criminals who get let off the hook early and they go right back out and commit crimes again, is it a "big whoop" sort of tone that gets expressed?

For instance, if this was a conversation about a BLM rioter getting pardoned by a democrat, and going out and getting in an altercation with cops after having their punishment cut short, would you be having this same sort of tone toward the situation?

It depends on the nature of the altercation. This news story is lacking details about that.

From 2023 FBI interview:

“Huttle believes that the FBI was responsible for the Capitol riot and explained that he saw actors attacking the Capitol who appeared to have too much training to be civilians.” Agents said Huttle declined to express any remorse or acknowledgment of wrongdoing for his or others’ actions.

Who is "they"? This thread's about one man.

But if I wanted to commit some insurrection, I need my gun in my hand, not back in the truck.

Yes the court did and sentenced him to 6 months (12 months max on his federal class A misdemeanor). The memo I posted for sentencing from the USAO requested 10 months. The judge did not provide detailed reasoning for his sentence, thought it was almost certainly given orally in court. A transcript is not available of the sentencing hearing.
