Remember when Desmond was trying to buy the engagement ring, and Ms. Hawking tried to talk him out of it?

They walked down the street and saw a man die. Ms. Hawking said, "That man was supposed to die. That was his path just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond. You do it because you're supposed to."

Later that day, Desmond told Penelope: "I'm sorry, Pen, but this--we're not supposed to be together."

And in the season 3 finale, as Jack is about to make that phone call, Locke says, "Jack. You're not supposed to do this."

So what is Jack supposed to do? Leaving the island to become a miserable oxycodone addict is just a detour, and he'll get back to the island. As we all know, the universe has a way of course-correcting.

That's a really good observation. And as flaky as Locke has been lately, I still tend to trust his assessment of the island-karma or whatever he has going on, especially after the whole Jacob scene.

So, what is Jack supposed to do? I'm thinking not trust Naomi, not make the call, not get them saved -- I just have no idea why.

There is a lot of talk on the forums of the different LOST blogs about whether, or how much, Jack is central to the whole story. The discussion centers around a rumor from Kristin at E-Online that one member of the cast isn't getting along with the other castmembers. Of course, the Fox haters think it's him, but no one knows. Rumors like this are taken seriously (by some) because if a castmember leaves it'll affect the story.

I tell you, I just don't get the Fox haters. I can't imagine the show being as good without him. The writers have given a lot of screentime to a character that they originally planned to kill off in the pilot. I think that says something about Fox as an actor.

I think the interview he did where he said he was the world's biggest liar, cheater, and bully/prankster (or something to that effect) turned a lot of people off to him as a person. I don't think there'd be anywhere near as many Matthew Fox haters had he not said those things, and I don't think it's any reflection on his acting.

As far as Jack goes, I think he's crucial to the story. I don't see how they'd be able to go on without him, which when you think about it, gives the actors a lot of negotiating power when their contract discussions come up in these last seasons.
