All most all quilts were originally made by hand, and there are still a number of quilts that are still made by hand today. Traditional wedding ring can be done by hand, Joseph's coat, Jacobs ladder, are just a few that lend themselves to hand piecing. Hand piecing is also user friendly too, as you can take small section with you and work on them when ever, not just when you have a machine in front of you.
Talk to your local quilt shop, or go online and do a search, and you will find the choices are endless.
Happy quilting.
I've only made one quilt in my life and it was a small throw. I took fabric paint and stenciled some of the squares, then alternated that with a patterned fabric. If you keep it small, hand stitching is easy. Or you can "tie" it. I think sewing the quilt is stronger.
My great-grandmother made summer quilts. They are quilts that use only a light piece of cotton fabric instead of batting. That made them easier to hand sew, plus they were usable all year round when used over blankets.
If it is any encouragement, my friend has made most of her quilts by hand. She is in her 80's now and continued to sew, knit and crochet until Alzheimers took hold.
Brinny, there are lots of small projects you can embark on to start with. Please let us know what you decide to try. I remember my friend would use up odds and ends by making patchwork needle cushions![]()
