There are a lot of aspects to people being sinful.
First and most obvious, the Bible states that we are. Of course, you're a seeker, so you aren't to the point of listening to what the Bible has to say as fact. It is still something to keep in mind. Maybe if you figure out that people are inherently sinful that you can accept the Bible is right in one more place.
Next, I'd like to ask other Christians if there is a good way to approach this subject matter? I've never discussed with someone the notion that people have a sinful nature before. It seems like something that would come up often, so does anyone have any bread and butter arguments for it?
Finally, I'll break into my reasonings:
Today, Jesus has influenced the world. Most people have heard of him, and many people worship him thusly affecting the way they live life. Jesus forgives sin and inspires Christians to live without sin. Once a Christian has accepted Jesus, they should return good for evil instead of doing an eye for an eye. People living in contact with Christians will see goodness in people instead of evil. So I'd say it is hard to take ones experiences with someone today and reason they have sinful nature. Even if you're not basing your ideas of a person off Christians, the Christian ideals have rubbed off in civilization in general so that people tend to act good today. Also of course, depending on who you sample, you can get different outcomes.
So what I say is to not look at modern civilization because it has been affected by Jesus. I also say not to look at individuals when making a judgment call. Instead I say we look at the kingdoms that existed before Jesus entered into the world. Many kingdoms were about conquer or be conquered, but lets just look at Rome at a glance because it was basically the ultimate kingdom back in the day. It was the most advanced civilization before Jesus came on Earth and started affecting stuff. Some people believe Jesus timing on Earth was due to Rome conquering Israel.
Rome was a conquer and enslave sort of deal. Rome was more powerful than its neighbors so it forcibly ruled over them in exchange for taxation. The basic idea is that,"We're stronger than you, so we'll take advantage of you." This idea is sinful. Let me know if you don't think this idea is sinful. Anyway, this is the basis by which I say that people are sinful.
Also, this is the same reasoning that eternal life with sin in people would end up being hell without God there to light the flames. Imagine if you will, everyone on Earth knowing that everyone else on Earth would enslave them if given a chance. Once people know that all other people are evil, the idea of human rights is thrown out the window. It is use or be used. I could discuss this scenario more if you want me to.
