  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's that time of the year

At work I receive both complaints from people who don't like that there are traditional Christmas carols played from time to time and (more) complaints from people who are offended the phrase "Happy holidays" appears in various places.

At a glance it looks like being heckled from opposite directions by two different groups of people with mutually exclusive demands.

But really it's a single group of people: People who can't enjoy their own interpretation of the season without making war on everyone else's.

...and they are best disregarded.

...which should inform you regarding my own stance.

My personal take on Christmas philosophy comes through my local Unitarian church, where we are welcome to say a few words of our own in the service, or read from a preferred text. I can share a meaning that is significant to me in a formalised setting which helps the creation of memory, gives a fuller sense of self expression and ownership, and allows the often neglected voice of the individual to be heard.

It's an interesting question that I'm not quite sure how to answer ... the reason being that I'm not quite sure why Christmas was elevated above other church celebrations. For example, I think I actually prefer Easter over Christmas as far as spiritual "value" goes (as if there were a way to quantify that). Yes, Christmas has been subordinated by secular interests, but that's not nearly as bad as All Saint's Day which has actually been inverted into Halloween and forgotten (by most).

So, I basically go along for the ride. I celebrate with those around me, but I'm not a big promoter of Christmas.

I like Christmas. It gives me a loving feeling to be around family and in the Christian atmosphere. I plan to go to church with my parents Christmas day. I sort of wish that Easter was celebrated more as it has much more meaning in it in my opinion.

Oh, I think secular christmas music is crap. Just throwing that out there.
I think that most pop christmas music, although it is not necessarily rubbish, is overplayed. I used to long for pagan seasonal traditions with romanticism, but we have christmas and st patrics and they are pretty poor. Or maybe its just me. I am in thwe wrong place doing the wrong type of thing.

While most secular Christmas music is total crap, I must say that I love Mel Torme's "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"....its pretty secular, nothing about the lyrics are religious. To me, it perfectly conveys the "feeling" of Christmas. Its all warm and fuzzy

I'd say any secular Christmas songs produced past 1960 are definitely total crap.
