  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It's slang, dude!

Growing up, I had a negative reaction when I heard middle-aged people try to sound hip by using "young people's" slang.

Now, being middlish aged myself, I'm doing the dreaded thing -- I'm picking up young people's expressions!!

I never thought I'd say, "dude," but I caught myself doing it the other day. And I couldn't help but pick up the expression, "Nice..." I also say "awesome" a lot, but that's sorta old slang. And I say "cool" which is REALLY old.

I'm still resisting "Sweet," though. ^_^

So what new slang do you use? And do you keep picking up new words as you get older?

I try not to use slang but, sometimes you can't help it. But I find myself using jazz-slang and expressions from the 40s.

Yeah, I'm a hep cat.

This describes me. When I rededicated my life, I had to find a few words to replace a few not-so-nice words. So its not uncommon to hear the words like shananagans, clod, or scallywag come out of my mouth.

I can relate. I'm always trying to come up with creative ways to say things that mean pretty much what you would 'normally' say if you weren't concerned about offending someone. The cool thing is that if you use a word someone hasn't heard forever they may find it funny and therefore it makes a nice tension breaker. :)

I try not to use the slang my kids use but sometimes it just comes out. I use cool a lot. However, my kids have friends who use the word "like" as every other word in a sentence. It cracks me up when I'm not feeling annoyed that they can't complete a full sentence without it:D
