If we obey the Law with the mindset that we make ourselves acceptable to God we will die.
This is why.
James 2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
God is holy of holy and righteous without spot. God is pure light with no darkness at all. His very brightness destroys darkness. If we, for one minute, rely or even think there is anything within ourselves that can remain pure enough or bright enough to stand in God's presence, apart from Christ, we fall from grace.
Galatians 5:4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Grace is the foundation of the Gospel message. Why is this? Because grace makes allowances for our sin nature.
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.
Salvation and eternal life is all about our relationship with Jesus, not in how much we sin or not sin.
1 John 5:11-12 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
The warning against sin, in the New Covenant, is not seen so much in not sinning, because who can not sin, but rather, the warning of sin in the New Covenant is to not let it harden your heart.
Hebrews 3:13 exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
God does not want sin to harden our hearts towards Him so He works with us and teaches us to help us grow and understand.
He does not want us relying on law as our means of acceptance.
Galastians 4:9-11 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.
God is not saying it's wrong to do these things but if we think for a minute we are acceptable to Him because of these things, apart from Christ, we will die.
God loves us more than we can understand. Jesus died for us to free us from bondage to the law of sin and death. Our obedience to the commandments of God is never seen as a measurement for acceptance, but rather, it should be the fruit of a changed life.
Remember, the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life.
Sin is the one who pays death, not God. And the only way sin can kill us is if we let it. And how we let it is when we fall from grace by measuring our acceptance to God by our behavior.
So how do you know if you have Jesus or if you've fallen from grace?
It's all about motive and attitude.
Luke 18:10-14 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other menextortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 'I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' "And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
