I was wondering when you read do you examine the literary devices (such as symbolism) which are used in the book or do you just read for the plot?
Does it depend on the book?

Agree.

Some books are meant to be read with you paying attention to all the literary devices, and some books are simply fluff and you can just read for fun.

When I read books like Lord of the FLies I always look for symbolism and the like.

When I read books by Mercedes Lackey....there's just not a point to looking for a deeper meaning

Some books have deeper meaning that you should look for--Lord of the Rings, for instance. With others, there is no deeper meaning, no matter what the author might tell you *coughEragonandEldestcough*
