CARY, IL-September 10, 2003 — It's the State of Illinois versus the United States of Johnson?
Curtis Johnson contends he shouldn't be on trial for assaulting a cop because he's an independent country.

The Cary resident faces four misdemeanor charges for allegedly scratching and pushing a police officer during a July traffic stop. In court documents, Johnson claims he's not a U.S. citizen – but a separate country all his own.


He says the state's attorney doesn't have the jurisdiction to prosecute because he has diplomatic immunity.

A judge isn't buying the argument. Johnson is free on $1,000 bond and is due in court October seventh.

Maybe he thinks that if McDonalds can get sued for making people fat, and a burgular can sue a business owner for leaving a beam out to be tripped on, then the courts might allow him to call himself an independent country.

This is a crazy world.
