Over the last several days, I had a tooth bothering me. It began being sensitive to cold, and then it started hurting when I chewed. The night before last, I examined it with a dental pick, and sure enough, there was a cavity. Yesterday I called the dentist's office for an appointment, but they had closed early and I couldn't reach them.
As we got ready to go to bed last night, it occurred to me to offer a simple prayer. I said out loud, conversationally as if talking to a friend, "Lord? Could You do me a favor and close up this cavity? I really don't want to have to go to the dentist." At this point, hubby assured me that he has had several fillings, and it's no big deal. I answered that I've also had a few fillings, and it's not the procedure I want to avoid. It's the copay. We've been working hard at catching up our backlogged medical bills, mostly generated by me, and I didn't want to create another one. Hubby didn't seem worried, was quite confident the money would come from somewhere, but we both agreed, let's just wait and see what God does.
Almost immediately, the pain stopped. When I went in to brush my teeth, I looked, and the cavity was already smaller. By the time I was finished brushing, it was gone. Today there is no pain, not with cold, not with sweet. I won't have to go to the dentist until next month, when we were both going to go in for our regular cleanings anyway.
God is good. There is no other way this could have happened.
The question is sometimes asked by skeptics, "Tsunamis, earthquakes, bombings... where is your God now?" Simple answer: Same place He always is. Why He lets those things happen, I can't say. Why He has not cured my diabetes, my arthritis, or my PTSD, yet instantly closed up a cavity so I wouldn't have to pay an extra dental bill, I don't know. But He is good, and I trust His reasons, whatever they may be.
