  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Were the seats in a higher-cost section, and you did an unauthorized upgrade? Basically you sat in better seats than you paid for? As far as I can see, that's the only situation in which it would be stealing. Were there any kind of security personnel or "bouncers" on the premises? Usually they look out for that kind of thing. I'd say if nobody objected, and the seats were the same price and unoccupied, I wouldn't be inclined to call it stealing.

After answering those questions for yourself, if it comes up again, be ready to get up and apologize if the real ticket-owners show up. Technically, you know it wasn't consistent with the rules of the stadium. But you did pay for seats.

When you're in situations like that, think about the golden rule -- would you want someone to do that to you? It doesn't always work, because people have different opinions, but most people in the situation of the ticketholder would just say, "these are my seats," then you apologize and move.

If your friends resist, then you have a different thing to deal with!

I don't really know anything about going to a sports game, so I don't know how seating works there. Was there a specific seat number on your ticket? If there was, and you took other seats, without first going and asking for those other seats, then I guess that could be considered stealing. If there wasn't a seat number given to you, and you moved to another seat within the same section that you had paid for, then it wouldn't be stealing. Also, if someone was in those seats and then got up and walked off and you took the seats then that would be stealing.

Me and my friends went to a hockey game and we had alot of people sit
near us so we moved to empty seats that were had less people. Is this stealing?
Only if you moved to the VIP section! If you had done anything wrong, I am sure someone would have said something.

There aren't always official people around to ask.

I don't go to a lot of sporting events, but know it's very common for people to get up and walk around, stand next the ice, move back to their seats, find another seat where they can see a part of the game better, stop to watch while they're on the way for snacks, go visit other friends they see. It's considered annoying by others, but I don't think the stadium organizers want people to feel locked into their chairs.

Many people and companies get season tickets, and then miss a lot of games, leaving the seats open. Just don't sit in the expensive seating.

You need to follow your conscience. If you felt guilty about doing something like this then don't do it.

That said, personally I don't think it's stealing. I've done it many times. If the seat owners come by or the ushers tell you to move then move on but otherwise... like al said, chalk it up to a blessing from the Lord. That's how I look at it.

I think most of the other posters have nailed it. If you moved up a price level into more expensive seats I would consider it stealing, regardless if the seats are owned by someone else or not. In that case you are taking more than you rightfully paid for. Like buying a hamburger and running off with a ribeye. However, I think scooting down to an empty aisle seat is fine as long as it doesn't belong to someone else and it's priced comparably.

The other side of the situation that you should be conscious of is that you are always witnessing for Christ whether your making a point to or not. If you are with unbelieving friends things like this may hurt your credibility with them in the long run. Especially if you feel like you're going behind someones back or sneaking around to get what you want. In this situation, arena ushers or security.

It's not my intention to sound disenting with this but....I also believe if the Lord made those seats available as a blessing there's a good chance He would have given you the tickets that go along with them.

Just something to think about.

Have a great day!
