  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is this statement true?

NO !

Calvinism is about the entire Bible. It is not one or the other but the entire package, which includes The Gospel.

Thank you! That is what I thought.

It truly bothers me when Lutherans make such claims. I don't know if it is simply ignorance, or a true bearing of false witness against fellow believers.

Many people and denominations seem to believe The God of the Bible is weak and needs our help for His plan of redemption to work, for us to allow or accept His gift of grace, a prime example of the human ego at work. Or that works in addition to grace are necessary to be redeemed. They especially don’t like us because we believe in predestination, of which the Bible speaks plainly in Romans 8:29-30.

Over all, we believe in the Sovereignty of God which is the biblical teaching that all things are under God's rule and control, and that nothing happens without His direction or permission. God works not just some things but all things according to the counsel of His own will (see Eph. 1:11). His purposes are all-inclusive and never thwarted (see Isa. 46:11); nothing takes Him by surprise. The sovereignty of God is not merely that God has the power and right to govern all things, but that He does so, always and without exception. In other words, God is not merely sovereign de jure (in principle), but sovereign de facto (in practice).

Hi Lizabth,
there is misunderstanding on both sides. When I was a Calvinist, I only had pity for Lutherans and their insufficiently reformed faith. It took a while before I 'got' Luther. Have you ever read Philip Cary's paper, Why Luther is Not Quite Protestant? It's a wonderful example of an Anglican mostly 'getting' both Luther and the Reformed. My Calvinist friend and his Calvinist pastor also enjoyed it.
