  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is this safe? Any advice???

Ok, I have been looking for a new bathing suit all summer and all they sell are triangle string bikini's where I live so I am very discouraged. Recently, I have been looking on the internet for a bathing suit and I found a really cute bathing suit for a reasonable price and am wondering if it is safe to buy it over the internet. My mom said that she absolutely will NOT give her credit card number out over the internet because it is not safe and she doesn't want her credit card number being sold over the internet. It is really that bad and unsafe to purchase something over the internet?

It really depens where you buy it. Usually you should buy from well known and trusted site. I myself have ordered stuff over the internet, biggest order was somethin like 400e (computer parts) so i think it is safe to order from the internet as far as the shop you buy from is reliable.

maybe check your Better Business Bureau. ?

I've bought stuff online with no problems, so I don't see why not if you're careful. Besides, with the level of encryption they have now for secure servers, it isn't likely someone is going to be listening in.

So, that pretty much leaves the vendor. I think I agree with Unimatrix. :)

A couple of signs:

1) the website will be something like:
www.bikinis.com
rather than
bikinis.tripod.com

2) The page where you put the credit card details on has:

https
rather than just
http

3) The site/company should have a contact page, listing a snail-mail address and a phone number.

If the above 3 are followed its generally safe. People don't really sniff for credit card details anymore, 'coz it is just getting harder and harder, and so more risky. So it is quite safe to order over the Internet. Its much easier for them to just make up some credit card details and use them and arrange for a delivery point, i.e. a friends address etc...
Good advise. Also, if it helps, I have bought tons of things on the net with no problems. Well, I did buy something from a cheezy site (my mistake) and they used my CC to buy PORN. But, I got my $$ back from the bank and the person was charged. :D

One word of warning about credit cards and the like though. If possible I would NEVER put my card online. No matter how strong that company's defenses are, you are always taking a chance putting your card online, no matter how small. There will always be a way in past that security that the "security experts" overlooked.

I run a business online. I make alot of purchases online with credit card. I use only one credit card online. It only has a $500 limit so I am not out 1000's of dollars if someone steals my card.

I have been doing this for years. Make sure it is a secure and https transaction.

The same is true of putting your credit card impression on a piece of paper. Someone could make a duplicate impression on a blank sheet and use your card. No matter how strong the company's defenses are, you are always taking a chance putting your card in the hands of a clerk, no matter how small. There will always be a person that the job screening overlooked.

Another option, my credit card company has a feature for online interactions. It creates an unique account number for every online purchase that is only good for a short, set amount of time, and then is no longer active. That way, after your purchase, the number is not able to be used. shopsafe

Out of 4 years over buying on the net... I was only just recently dupped on a product I bought. Basically spent 100 on a computer product that was not the brand specified. I would not shop with Yahoo.

Other than that, I have never had my number used. I trust it. Everything is based on a trust system. Store clerks can take your number if they want.

The same is true of putting your credit card anywhere. Someone could make a note of the number and use your card. No matter how strong the company's defenses are, you are always taking a chance putting your credit card anywhere, no matter how small. There will always be a situation that the opinion of the majority overlooked.
