  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I recently took part in work experience in a primary school and I found somthing very unnerving about the experience.

Each morning at assembly all the children were constantly reminded of God and each one had heavy religious undertones.

I feel it is morally wrong to force a religion upon children at such a young age particularly in a public school where other faiths attend.

Am I wrong in thinking this is not right and akin to brainwashing our children to religious conformity?

edit

It was a private school in the UK

heavy religious undertones as in everything was about God and how great it is to believe etc

I suppose it's hardly new I mean this is how religion started to make people feel good etc Christianity is currently one of the top western religions but ever since man could communicate he made things up to explain what he couldn't understand which seems to work so fair enough.

God is a state of mind and as powerful as you let it become but I just didn't like the fact that it was made the key focus of each day it's a shame that we can't be good on our own merits and must attribute everything to a communal entity.

Well, a lot of primary schools are run by churches--I remember going to one myself when I was small, because it was only a couple blocks from my house. If the one you attended was run by a church then, like any private school, they can teach the kids whatever they like and allegedly the parents sending the kids there know this and don't mind. Do I think it's right to indoctrinate the young? I think it's pretty selfish to force your beliefs on a small malleable mind like that, so, no, I don't think it's right, so I probably wouldn't send my kids there.

On the other hand, if it's a federally funded public primary school then the religious emphasis should be stopped before it goes lawsuit and save everyone a lot of trouble. (I'm assuming you're American since you don't have a little flag, if you aren't it may be different where you live)

In all honesty, I don't feel it is really all that moral. I feel that only by personal revelation can one truly be part of any religion. I have seen far to many people that claim a religion only because they were taught that way, not that they believed in it.

It is of no place for a school to teach religion, only knowledge (and I do make a distinction between the two). Let the parents and church handle religious education, that is what they are for.

But, as said, is this a public school, and is it in the US? Apart from those conditions, it is possible it is not against any law or such. Although I was raised in much the same type of school...

It absolutely is wrong---to say nothing of being against the law---in a public school, and should be reported immediately.

Unless it is not a forced program (there are after school programs and such, never heard of it in the morning) where the parents gave consent for their children to attend. At the same time, I have the feeling those same parents would hate it if there was a Muslim program, even if the parents had to agree to let their children attend, but people having double standards is a completely different topic.

Not enough information.

In what country is the school? Is it a faith school?
What exactly do you mean by "heavy religious overtones"?
How specific to one particular religion are the references?
What's the demographic of the student population?

If it's a public school, yes. If it's a private school, well, private schools are private institutions that don't have to abide by a lot of federal laws so no. I was put in private school precisely because it was private and so it could be assured that I would be in an almost uniformly Catholic environment, though part of it also had to do with the atrocious situation of the public schools where I live.
