What helps me make Godly decisions is always thinking God wants what is best for me. Is this a good way of thinking or is it unrealistic
It is very good thinking. Everything He allows, even suffering, brings Him glory. We who believe will look back at our time here and will declare that it was ALL worth it.

God bless!

Very realistic. Some Bible verses for you:

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:11

Everything God has done, is doing or will do is for our ultimate good, to His ultimate Glory.

However, a Proverb is in order for our own decision making to consider:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

It's just a matter of knowing that God is absolutely trustworthy.

Many scriptures tend to agree with that thinking.
A few of those scriptures are Deuteronomy 5:29; Isaiah 48:17, 18; Psalm 19:8; Psalm 32:8
Having such an attitude is actually a safeguard, since it prevents one from leaning on their own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.

It's good too, when we can actually "taste and see that Jehovah is good" Psalm 34:8
In other words, when we really experience that God does want the best for us, our trust in him is strengthened, so we always base our decisions on the guidance found in his word.

So, you are on the right track.

He does.

"casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)

But > our Heavenly Father is all-loving. So, what He does with you will fit with how He also is loving any and all people.

Have you read about Joseph, in Genesis chapters 37-50? God had things work out for Joseph, but His blessing of Joseph had all-loving results.

Hello QuestionQuest74, keeping the truth about God in the forefront of our minds (e.g. that He always wants what is best for us) is a GREAT way to help us grow in our trust of Him, as well then, in our obedience to Him (because walking in obedience to Him often requires a very high level of trust in Him, yes?).

The other VERY important factor in making Godly decisions is found in knowing His will (as others have already mentioned above), so setting aside time each day to grow in your knowledge and understanding of God and His word is critical.

May God bless you as you seek to know Him and obey Him!!

p.s. - just FYI, I have often found the following admonishment to be a blessing to me in decision making :)
