Self preservation vs true conversion, is there a difference?
Self sacrificial love for God and neighbor will accompany true conversion.
One who has truly been converted will keep the commandments of God not as a means to be converted, but rather, as a fruit of it because the commandments in stone are the visible manifistation of godly love in letter form.
Romans 13:8-10 Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God's law. For the commandments say, "You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet." These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God's law.
Love is spiritual, it's invisible, it cannot be seen unless it's manifested through our lives in how we live. The Law on stone is love in letter form. This is why God says, "This is love, that we walk according to the commandments".
2 John 1:6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

Those who are seeking to perserve their lives will do what's necessary to avoid the fiery hell in order to gain heaven. They will argue over the Law because they see the Law as a stumbling block to their goal of reaching heaven, rather than, God's defination of love and true freedom for all.
