• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What is mental retardation? Answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_retardation

Just wondering, I haven't had time to really research it or look into it.
We're really busy right now raising kittens.

I've only researched it a little bit when I was looking into treatments and cures for it I was only told that there are not any and that the medical field does not yet know how to treat mental retardation.

There is no cure; there are some interventions and methods of teaching that can help people to make the most of what they have.

As an example in the UK
Makaton and widget can help people to communicate.
Colour codes and symbols can help them plan their days.
TEACCH and related education programs can help people to do maths and english.

A good psychologist could help assess the problems and help with a plan to maximize the person's abilities. The psychologist would also refer to other helping professionals as needed to assist the person in question. Every person has innate worth, that is God given, and can in many cases go on to lead a fulfilling life. If you don't know or can't find a psychologist your primary care phsycian (family doctor) should be able to locate and refer to one.

In order to develop an appropriate
treatment plan, an assessment of age-
appropriate adaptive behaviors
should be made using developmental
screening tests. The objectives of
these tests are to determine which
developmental milestones have been
missed. The primary goal of treatment
is to develop the person's potential to
the fullest. Special education and
training may begin as early as infancy.
Attention is given to social skills to
help the person function as normally
as possible.
It is important for a specialist to
evaluate the person for coexisting
affective disorders that may require
treatment. Behavioral approaches are
important in understanding and
working with mentally [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]
individuals.

Mental retardation is not a disease - how can there BE a cure? MR is also not a mental illness - again how can there BE a treatment?

It is damage or incomplete development stemming from one of the following: genetic traits such as Down's Syndrome conditions; exposure to such things as PKUs, rubella (German measles), or even alcohol; head injuries; lack of oxygen as a fetus or baby; and malnutrition as an infant.

There is no "cure" for damage. And incomplete development cannot be completed. Ergo, no treatments.

These people, if taught adaptive skills and life skills in small tasks at a time and encouraged to be as independent as possible depending on their level of MR, can lead productive lives, full lives and happy lives. They can experience joy and bring joy to others. But they will never be cured - because they have no disease.

It's being damaged in a car accident and losing your arm. You can't be cured of that. But you can learn adaptive skills and can receive a prosthetic.

If you're referring to Down's Syndrome, then I don't believe so. At least it hasn't been known to most of civilization throughout the ages. God can do anything, however. I just haven't seen or heard of it being done... Yet.

For Autism, a reversal of many symptoms have been reported with the use of stabilized oxygen therapies and enzyme-rich diet to cleanse the body of microbial infection and heavy metals. Jenny McArther is one celebrity that swears by it and claims her son "recovered" from autism with this kind of therapy. *Note- she didn't say "cured".

Some mental conditions are caused by emotional trauma, which can be cured through deliverance and inner healing of the memories. I've known a few schizophrenia and even a severe case of anorexia to have been cured this way.

My father also cured a man in his forties from a dazed-like stupor in Mexico by breaking a curse placed on by witchcraft when he was only 17 years old. The man snapped out of it completely and was normal after many years.
