I am an Anglican and usually attend my local anglo catholic parish church but recently I unfortunately got taken in by Pentecostalism when I visited an Elim Pentecostal church in the uk & was hooked by the welcoming friendly atmosphere and the lively Contempory Christian music like Hillsongs Australia played by a Live Worship Band.Everybody was up clapping & dancing, but what alarmed me was these people start getting all hyped up and emotional crying out to Jesus, and writhing on the floor, speaking in tongues and crying, shaking & jerking etc and sometimes they make animal like noises.
Even their Pastors kind of shout their sermon whilst pacing up & down the platform-they can't seem to talk normally and to stand still.
They also seem to have altar calls where they invite people to go forward to come to Salvation ie,invite Jesus Christ into their lives and hearts as their personal Saviour and Lord of there life-they call this been ''Born Again'' or ''Getting Saved''.
They are so very different to us Anglicans who believe we're Born Again at our Baptism as babies-but Pentecostals don't do infant baptism-they told me sprinkling that is done at our Christening isn't proper baptism as to baptize means to immerse & that is done by Full Immersion when they are at an age to understand the gospel and old enough to repent of our sins and become a Born Again Christian by turning from our sinful lives and inviting Jesus into our lives and heart as personal Lord and Saviour.
This is so different to what we believe in the cofe-do you think all this Born Again Christian stuff is just the Pentecostals-do you think theirs is an over the top extremist form of Christianity?
The modern contempory music of theirs I like just as much as our worship with all the old traditional hymns and the organ and choir but I feel very very wary of the other weird stuff they do-they get so worked up & emotional & that takes some getting used to.You have a job to hear or concentrate on the sermon cause the pastor shouts his sermon.
I read somewhere that this is one way they Brainwash new recruits into their sect by using sensory overload. They do it with their music also-I find they often have the same chords of music playing over and over again in the background on the guitars and keyboards whilst the pastor is praying or speaking prayer over someone.
The whole thing doesn't seem like ''Church'' at all-its more like Entertainment.
Should I get away from Elim before they Brainwash me further? You find if you keep going you get more and more hooked on it and want to keep going back.
Has anyone else visited a Elim pc or Aog pc church and felt alarmed by what goes on in these places-do you think the things that go on in these churches is of God?I personally don't think it is.It seems Christian but all this falling on the floor supposedly in the Spirit and writhing, laughing, shaking & crying seems more demonic to me because surely the Holy Spirit would not cause a person to act in this way nor to make animal like noises whilst writhing around on the floor.
Another thing I found alarming was the way they prayed over me in tongues shaking me around to receive ''Baptism in the Holy Spirit'' I could also feel them pushing me,obviously trying to get me to fall down on the floor.
Do you think Pentecostal churches are dangerous? How can these churches call themselves Christians when they do such wild and crazy things.
I have now ceased going to a Pentecostal church but I do like contempory Christian music occasionally and miss that part of it,but do you think churches should have this so called modern music-do you think it should be traditional hymns and a choir, not all this jumping up and down and dancing to drums, guitars and keyboards.Theres no quietness or reverence for God in these kinds of church at all.
What do you think of the more lively Evangelical kinds of Anglican churches where they do have Contempory worship with drums, guitars and keyboards? Some of these churches have two sunday morning services, one with organ, choir and traditional old hymns and a contempory evangelical service with a band and modern contempory songs, and then theres a more Charismatic kind of Anglican church which has mainly All contempory modern worship music,Alpha courses etc.
Are these churches just as bad as the Pentecostal churches though, especially if it was more charismatic than Evangelical, like Holy Trinity Brompton-home of Nicky Gumbel and the Alpha course-would it be better if I want to hear modern contempory worship music without all the crazy stuff Pentecostals do to go to a Evangelical parish church which has a choice of two services-one lively Contempory musi service with a worship band and the other service a traditional one with the organ, choir and old hymns-or should I just stick with a traditional anglo catholic parish church instead and avoid churches which have this contempory worship music?
