Is the E in Baptiste silent?

Worthless question, but I know we have a few multi-lingual folk here, so I will go ahead and ask.

There is a street in my brothers town that has a street with that name. We were discussing whether the E was silent or not. Does it depend on which language is trying pronounce it? I thought it would be there in Spanish and English. He didn't think it would in French.

My French is rusty, but depending on the accents above the letter, that judges the pronunciation. If I remember my alphabet pronunciations correctly, the letter I is pronounced like an E. So, it's pronounced Bapteest (Whether in English or French, the E's probably going to be silent!) compared the English pronunciation of the word, baptist.

It's late, i'm rambling, anyone who's French Kung-Fu is better then mine wanna chime in?

I think the origin of the name is French, so it sounds like it's silent.
