Is Shangdi the same as our God? Same root?
That depends. The term "Shangdi" has several different meanings (mainly because it depends which "shang" character you're using to spell it).
In the oldest texts, Shangdi was considered the first of the Chinese gods and was the creator of Heaven, Earth, and all the other gods. He was said to have given the ancient Chinese the concept of a seven day week, and to have guided the Chinese to the Central Plains from a home somewhere in the West after they failed to build a tower to Heaven to avoid a great flood they feared (the Chinese character for "migrate" includes pieces of the characters for "Eastward," "flood" and "tower"). It's hard not to see in the roots of this story a trace of the Tower of Babel.
However, over centuries, China's mythology surrounding this figure has essentially copy-catted every major deity found between Mesopotamia and Korea during the 2nd and 3rd millennia BC and has emerged as an entirely different figure.
