If your local law is against it, you are violating it, whether it is a sin or not. If you are downloading a current movie, then yes. If you are downloading an inaccessible movie otherwise, then maybe not. There is a gray area.
Is pirating educational books a sin? I'm a teen in a "developing" country. The book cost about $100 paperback.
If your conscience convicts you as a sin, then don't do it. If you are downloading an old edition of the book, then maybe not. It is okay if you are downing a book that is not copyrighted.
Is Pirating Digital Media As Sinful As Stealing?
I'd say no. The two concepts are not identical but are related. Stealing is a more general concept. Not all data piracy is stealing; it could be data sharing. Digital piracy is not as simple as physical theft.
Is pirating digital media a sin?
Generally speaking, yes.
