I have a sister in Christ that has a gift for singing and she often records herself singing with her guitar on her youtube account. I told her that she seems to have another skill that's useful in ministry, but she doesn't recognize it. The other day we had a disagreement on something theological and she had some arguments that kinda made me think. I taped our convo and have it uploaded, here i have it pasted below. Listen to it and tell me if she has a hidden skill. We had an argument about speaking in tongues: I don't believe in it but she does. It seems her arguments show signs of a skill she has, and it quite challenged me and made me think. Now this is not about which side wins, because it is pretty obvious who is winning. (though u may tell me later your opinions on your side). I thought, though i may not agree with her, her arguments seem really challenging to me and I think challenges are a good thing. I tell her about this skill she has but she doesn't see it. So I want to see if any of u guys think she has this skill which she is somehow not recognizing, or is it just in my opinion. I wanna see if u guys agree she has a hidden skill, if u guys agree, then i would then try convincing her to seek out an opportunity for a ministry besides her musical pursuits.

Your friend has a lot to say - too much, perhaps. She seems far more eager to speak than to listen. As well, she doesn't offer any solid scriptural basis for her assertions about speaking in tongues. Her reasoning is filled with fallacies, which are obscured by the torrent of words that rush out of her mouth.

I couldn't discern any particular skill that she has apart from being very quick to speak her opinion - which isn't really a "skill," I think.

I've been raised in a Christian home since I was born. I haven't seen anyone speak in tongues, and I haven't spoken in tongues. The issue with most people who claim it to be a gift is they also say you must speak in tongues to prove you are saved/have the Holy Spirit.

It's always referenced in the Bible as a gift and not for everyone. I'm not about to claim it doesn't exist - although plenty of people fake it - I will say that I am not sold that it is a gift of the present and I will also say that "Speaking in tongues" doesn't mean some mumbo-jumbo language that makes no sense. Taking Pentecost into consideration, it makes more sense it's a gift for language.

You make better points.

Well I listened to most of that recording and other than her ability to waste my time, I say she has no hidden talent. I didn't quite understand if she claimed to could drink poison. What does she think about not being harmed from poison?

somehow the playing got a little messed up in a jumbled unintelligible flow and it got all unclear and kept pausing here and there. Anyway, she said that she wouldn't drink poison "cause I'm not foolish," but that if anything harmful by any chance enters her body she will not be affected by it because of her having the spirit of God. After that then she said the truth is that no poison can harm her body of any kind. I'm assuming she's talking of Jesus' words in the end of Mark 16 being figurative.

I guess I will have to re-listen to this again before I talk to her again about it. I'm sure she will bring it up again and with someone like her, I will really have to be prepare since she responds within a span of just 1 second. I don't know how she can talk as if she is a word machine that has been programmed. But oh well, if I was able to have words per minute like she does, that would help.

DrenchedInHisBlood, I much prefer your stance. She didn't convince me in the slightest. And as others have mentioned, she just bulldozed over your points. She certainly doesn't have the gift of listening!

If modern day speaking in tongues is a genuine gift, then as Paul teaches, not everyone in the Church will be equipped with it. We each have our various gifts; different abilities with which to serve Christ.

I think your friend should stick to singing and leave doctrine to those with the gift of teaching.

By the way, I hope she knew you were recording the conversation. :o

ok, i guess her talent is on something else. Maybe speaking or arguing, which can fall into any category. She may not have ministry gift in this area other than her singing, but i can't deny she has a skill after this talk. Maybe not specifically a spiritual gift, but generally speaking her skill lies more on argumentation or whatever it is

I can't understand why you insist that because she argues she has a skill. More of a curse if you ask me. Running her mouth and refusing to let you contribute to the conversation is not something to strive for.
